Hi
I have 3 kittens that hang around my house but are ferals. How do I build a shelter for them this winter? |

The ferals/strays/dumpees here have the shelters we built but they go out into the yard all winter. WE now keep two in a heated space in our garage and put a cat door in so they can come and go as they please. Other cats use the outdoor shelters.

I built a 3 by 4 by 3 foot high house for them with 2 doors.Still have to foam insulate it.They seem to like it the way it is but my wife wants plexiglass windows so she can see inside.I,m just worried if I will lose too much heat.
Sorry I,m new at this but winters coming soon. |

These cat shelters have no windows . Don't put in any windows there needs to be a front and back door according to this video . The shelter had high enough off the ground to keep it dry inside . You don't want snow or water getting into it . I think this so kind of you do being doing for the . They're going to love having a dry warm home for the winter . I don't think the cats would like wild animals being able to look in their home. |

A removable roof or side so you can clean inside is good too. Don't make it too big inside or they will lose heat to empty space. You may have to line the foam too, some will scratch at it and it gets all chewed up. Is it that firm sheet pink insulation?

I put 2 inch styrofoam all in the inside and underneath my enclosure.I put a sheet of it on the top as it is pretty rigid by itself. The weak part now is the 2 8 by 8 openings I have on each side. How to I make a door to keep the cold out?. Can I hand some heavy cloth there so it moves back and forth ?

The video I posted show some kind of fabric being used to keep the cold . Do you have an old shower curtain that could be used it would be waterproof and be cut to fit the door.

My OH used heavy duty clear plastic, cut in strips, with each strip weighted with a washer. They use it and they can see through it. He also put an entry "porch" sort of thing at the entry with doors to the outside and doors to the shelter off set. Set it up without the plastic strips first so they would go in freely.
