Getting by...

What to do, when you have no sheep for your Border Collie to herd? Storm looooves his ducks! Now, if we had sheep I doubt he'd look twice at the ducks, but for now these guys are "just ducky"

Adorable! Did the herding come instinctively, or is he getting/ has be been taught how to herd?

I love the head down work posture. *L* too cute! So those ducks aren't the ones from the park that Storm brought home with him? LOL

Both actually. He had a lot of instinct and was a natural when he was started on sheep. Took very little direction to get him doing the right thing. I adopted him from a working sheep farm that not only is a breeder of working border collies but also runs a border collie rescue. They trial some of their dogs (sheep dog trials) both in Canada and the US. When my BC's were old enough I took them back there to try on sheep and then began going for weekly lessons with them last year. I would have liked to continue this spring but things got pretty hectic as I was usually out working the dogs in town every morning doing goose control.

Nope I've only seen a few ducks in town and at the park and we left them alone. These are the ones I bought and raised from day-olds and had swimming in my bathtub

Hello Gail P,

Please tell Storm that he does indeed look very menancing when he is giving the ducks his predator eye
Cheers,
Joanne

I don't know about menacing, he looks too happy all the time. He just won't stop smiling The ducks have a healthy respect for him regardless though. Now the chickens are another story, they really don't care. Here's a couple where he's not smiling and the chickens are like "yeah, whatever". Btw, in case anyone's wondering, the ropes and twines are supposed to be keeping the horses away from the back wall of the chicken coop so they can't steal hay out of the cracks in the hay shed that abuts the coop.

You can't see the chicken he's staring at in this shot, but he's so serious, except for the crazy inside out ears

Storm says thank you very much!

Here's Rain looking very predatory while working geese at a client's. When it comes to "real" work they're both much more serious.

I think you may have the best job in the entire world.
I want to learn!
Do you think I can my dogs can learn to herd office workers away from the watercooler and back to their desks? This may be lucrative in Ottawa!

Ha ha! You can try! You have big dogs, herding may not be at all necessary. Just get them guard the watercooler looking grouchy and that may be all it takes.

That is so what a border is made for, my friend had two and they took great joy in herding whatever came their way, so much instinct just bred into them, wonderful dogs
