Place or a Down/Stay!!

Is a great thing to teach your dog!! Okay so I will probably get blasted but believe me this is the greatest thing to teach your dog!!!

I've read soooo many posts from people on forums etc about how their dogs just won't behave. I've discovered a trainer who shall remain nameless for now...pm me if you're really interested. He works with dogs other trainers have given up on and helps out alot of shelters. I've spoken to him on the phone and what he says makes so much sense and you don't need to take months and months to fix issues.

His main thing for dogs to be good in the house or where ever is a place command and not just for a minute or two. I've taught Bayley it, she's not perfect yet because I don't always enforce cause in the house I have no issues with her. This trainer works with aggressive dogs, whether it is biting people, other dogs etc. His thing is dogs need to be calm in the house, he's got usually 5 or 6 dogs in his house and they all learn the place command. Otherwise there would be bedlam! People comment and say the poor dogs look bored...his response Good!! I agree, Bayley's at the point where I say place, she goes to her mat and goes to sleep. She's not constantly bouncing off the walls or being underfoot. It's the one command I very rarely if never hear about being taught. His dogs learn to turn off the hyper switch and this includes 12 week old puppies. I guess I kind of taught the same thing to Bayley when she was a puppy and I used her crate, when she was getting too crazy, she was told crate and left to cool her jets for a while. Nine times out of ten, she'd be sound asleep in a few minutes.

Very good reminder for everyone.

We talk about this as well. If your dog can do a long down/stay or sit/stay no matter what is going on around him then most of your problems are solved. People rarely take the time to practice this and it really isn't hard to do. You just have to do it!

I didn't know it either!! I started using it with Bayley and now with a little help she can stay in the room without carrying on when Mom's nurses come over. I do still have to remind her but for the most part she can keep it together and stay on her mat.

Are you asking which words to use? Place? Or Down/Stay?

FWIW, I separate them. DOWN/STAY is formal obedience, does not last more that 5 mintues, unless the dog we are honouring in Rally is taking a long time, and it's fairly strict. The dog must not get up so high to switch sides that space can be seen under his belly or we'll be NQ'd. I want him to keep his focus on me.

I say MAT instead of place. Mat can be a variable length of time. It's not strict. My dog can stand, lie down, sit, wriggle around, have a scratch, as long as he stays on the mat. I can take anything resembling a mat with me, a towel say, put it down somewhere and tell him MAT. It will mean I want him to stay in that spot but he is free to move around within that spot as much as he likes. It is only kind to put the mat in a place out of the way of foot traffic, in someone else's home for instance, or in a place where the dog feels comfortable.

that's pretty much what I do. I use a bath mat, works great. It doesn't slip around, easy to wash and is just the right size. Same with me, she can sit, stand whatever. I just don't get why it seems not that many people use it! It is easy to teach and prevents so many other problems.
