Annoyance with pet owners

This is a great forum, and it is quite extensive as well. Please forgive me if I am reranting as I have not had time to read all the wonderful and informative posts. Also as an aside, the photos of the pets are simply breathtaking. I wish I was rich and could afford to compile a book of photos, most of them are professional quality.
My rant today is regarding my fabulous new dog Rocky whom I got from the Toronto Humane Society. He is just the sweetest and kindest of dogs. It is very obvious that someone has gone to a great deal of trouble to train him well. He has the manners of a gentleman. What I can't understand is why someone would give him up like that because he is elderly. He is 7 years old but in good health and such an ideal companion. I just don't understand people Perhaps it was meant to be tho, I am so lucky I found him

Congrats on your new addition, and thanks for adopting an older dog.

It's hard to say why people rehome their animals, but often times - it's not their fault. Death can be a cause as to why pets are brought to a shelter.

Welcome and congrats on your "new" dog!
Please don't think badly of the old owner. In these days of uncertainty it is possible he was surrendered to the shelter because the owner just couldn't look after him any more. It may possibly have been the hardest thing they had to do. Look at it this way..... you now have a wonderful well trained companion because of the first owner's actions.

Hello Solange,

I totally understand your wonder about "why" your beautiful pet was rehomed. I have spent a long time thinking the same type of thoughts.
14+ has added a great point though, and I will try to follow her guidance myself Wise, wise one, she is! I have a Dogue de Bordeaux who is my perfect gentlemen, and is also a rescue. I shake my head thinking that someone did not see what a treasure they had. Or maybe as 14+ added, they did understand and wanted him to have the kind of home he deserved.
Congratulations on finding your great partner and friend, thank goodness for rescues.

Most likely with an older trained dog, it is that the owner died

I am very pleased that you adopted an older dog ...it must be so hard on them to lose their homes

What makes me sad is reading these posts on Kijiji "dog/cat was previously rescued, but we just don't have time/money/common sense to keep them anymore...free to whoever"

Congrats on your new dog. That is the perfect age to adopt. If he is that well trained it must of been some unfortunate situation. Now we need a picture..........

not only do I wonder why people need to take their dogs to the spca when they are so wonderful...I wonder why the spca deems them unadoptable and schedules them for euthanasia. I have gotten 2 fosters from them that are so amazing that I considered keeping them myself. If I wasn't moving next year I would have.

No Frenchy, I'm talking about it not being the owners fault. Which is why I then went on to give the example of death as a potential cause. In some cases unfortunatley, it is not even up to the owner as to why the dog needs to be rehomed.

Awwwhhh...so glad you saved him.

I thought you got him from MEOW? Does the rescue take cats from the Cal SPCA too? I didn't know that.

Thank you for all your wonderful words of encouragement and advice. I am certainly enjoying the fact that Rocky is so well trained and polite. I am certainly not Ms. Dog trainer of the Year lol. My son and hubby have taken a few pictures. I will check and see if they know how to post them so you can see how handsome he is. Personally, I think I love his nose the best. It is very kissable

Love to all,
Solange

It was just meant to be.

There are so many reasons why people abandon their pets. Some heartbreaking stories and others just down right ridiculous.

Congrats on your new addition....and thank you so much for adopting an older soul..and from a shelter.!

It's so nice to hear you have given Rocky a loving home to continue his long happy life.

I also concur that pictures (especially nose ones) would be a hit!
