16 year old cat with diarrhea

My 16 year old male, neutered cat has been losing weight and has runny, smelly diarrhea that won't stop. Vet has run every test possible and can't find anything. Steroids help, but can't be given forever. He's skinny, but vet can't find any lumps. She says he's not hurting. This has been going on for over a year and while he eats and drinks plenty, he's still losing weight. Is it time to put him down, or is there something that might help him?

What does your cat eat?

He was eating Cat Chow indoor formula, that I am now supplementing with canned cat food because it's easier for him to eat. (A few missing teeth.) I tried only canned food, but he still wanted hard food anyway, so I let him eat both.

It could save your cat's life. I'm at work so I don't have too much time to go into detail, but you absolutely must get your cat off of kibble. Doesn't matter if he likes it, it's killing him. That's great that he'll canned, at least he recognizes it as food. Not sure what brand you feed, but I recommend switching to a novel protein, grain-free one like Innova Evo 95% venison or duck. It's expensive, but it will save you a bundle in vet bills, and hopefully give you time to consider a home-made raw diet, as per the link I gave you.

Did vet test for thyroid function? Sounds like he may have hyperthyroidism.

Did the blood tests incl T4 aka Tetraiodothyronine?

Did the vet do fecal testing for bacterial infections like Coccida and Giardia?
