is it ok to feed my cat a little dog food?

I ran out of cat food - oops - it was on my list, but I forgot. I feed her science diet hairball control - the dry stuff usually. I have one little can of the canned kind - it was free with a bag and a coupon, but that may not last through tonight and tomorrow until I can get to the pet store.
She likes the new food I got for the dogs.
She tore the bag open when I put it in the kitchen and ate some.
It is Eagle Pack Lamb and Rice.
Will it be bad to feed her a little of that until I get more cat food?
Thanks!

well Eagle Brand is much better than Iams no matter how you cut it!! short term (few days) it wont hurt anything. if its long term, make sure you supplement with extra protein. feeding raw eggs would help with that.

Cats can survive on dog food for a day or two but most of it does not contain enough protein or taurine for them.

Since you have run out of Science Diet, may I suggest that you find a different brand to feed your cat. Check the ingredients for that and compare them with brands like:

1. Orijen (www.championpetfoods.com)
2. Innova & EVO (www.naturapet.com)
3. Wellness & Wellness CORE (www.omhpet.com)
4. Go Natural (www.petcurean.com)
5. Felidae (www.canidae.com)

Feeding a good canned food would be much better than dry food for your cat. You may not need hairball medicine or food. There is not enough liquid in dry food.

Two good canned foods are:

Wellness canned feline grain-free
and
Nature's Variety feline Instinct which is also grain-free. Instinct is a great protein source for cats which are carnivores.

Look at the ingredients in some dry foods. corn, corn gluten, sorghum, cellulose. YUCK! I fed dry to my cats up until the pet food recalls and then did a lot of research on food. I didn't have a clue that canned was better than dry for cats. My cats are doing great on the 2 foods I listed. I'm sure there are other good choices.

Feeding dog food to cats is not a good idea. The nutrient values are very different. You may even be able to get Newman's Own canned feline in a grocery store, another good food with organic chicken and turkey.

Cassiopeia I agree,Science Diet dry only,is not good for a cat, more than likely the cat will end up with UTI or other healthproblems, canned is the way to go for a kitty and not Science Diet.

Yes, I ditto all others and their recommendations. I changed my seniors cat food to Wellness Grain Free Canned and it made a world of difference in her health. She also gets Orijen as a treat.

I also think canned is the best to feed but can be difficult for some who are on a budget and/or have multiple cats. It should definitely be used daily as a supplement though to increase water intake.

The premium/holistic brands do not contain these ingredients.
