min pins with rash

Hi. I have noticed a very dark purplish/red rash developing on both my min pins. I havent really noticed any real change in behavior such as itching, or vomiting, etc. Lexi has several spots of this rash all over her belly, and inner thighs. Deuce has only one but it also on his belly and is kind of raised. Is anyone familiar with rashes? I really want to avoid taking them to a vet if it is not necessary. Lexi started last night getting up almost every hour eating grass. Is this related or is this something different alltogether. Any advice would be great! Thanks

so getting up every hour at night to eat grass is NOT a change in behavior?

#1 - no one will diagnose a skin rash (or any other ailment) over the internet

#2 - it's impossible for us to tell you if we've seen it before without seeing a photo

#3 - I'm fairly certain most replies will be "call/see your vet".

once you have called or seen your vet, please come back and let us know what's going on. once we know what the rash IS (as determined by a professional) we may have advice. maybe it's a common thing that a few of us have dealt with, or maybe it's something new altogether. either way, a vet should examine & evaluate your dogs.

none of us like running into the vet when not necessary, but rashes and bites can often get much worse, quickly. The last thing you want is a small rash or bite to turn into large open infected sores. best to catch it early IMO.

good luck!

We noticed the rash (dark purple/red -almost looks like bruises)about 4 days ago... the eating grass thing just started last night, that is why I dont think they are related.. and both min pins have the rash.. and only one has the grass issue. Other than that... no other unusual behavior has been seen. I will definately be bringing them to the vet, but I was just simply checking to see if any other min pin owners have had similar experiences. (i am not looking for a diagnosis) I recently had to take my older dog into the vet for a problem in her back... she has been diagnosed with spondylosis, and possible disk disease. We spent a fortune just to see the vet, and only to find out it there is not much we can do for her other than pain medication. I was hoping to avoid the major cost of seeing a vet, and just being told it is something that would clear up on its own. This is my first experience with a skin problem in a pet.. so its quite new to me. Thank you jessie76 for your advice. Better safe than sorry.

We had a male setter that used to get something that your description sounds very similar to. It turned out to be a staph infection. He did require meds--an antibiotic cream, as I recall (it was a couple of decades ago ). Definitely sounds like something you should see a vet about. As Jessi said, rashes can get worse so quickly--and if it is a staph infection, you sure don't want to mess around with it!

Good luck with your min pins and keep us posted!

I think this warrants a vet visit as well. If your vet charges ridiculous prices just to see him, Dena, I recommend calling other vet hospitals and asking for their consultation fees. We have several around here that charge double what others charge! As for medication, if your dogs are prescribed any, ask if there is a 'human equivalent,' the recommended doses, and get a written prescription. You can fill it in any pharmacy and chances are it will be much cheaper than what is charged you at the vets. Good luck and please let us know what you've found.

Thank you for all your thoughts. I thought about taking Deuce to the vet all night last night, but couldn't really make a decision. Well, seems he made it for me. This morning, he jumped off the back of the couch onto a heat register, and tore his claw near clean off. I wouldn't of noticed as he just walked away as he normally would, but he left a rather nasty blood trail. So.. off I rush him to the vet. Thankfully the vet gave us a regular office visit. He had a check up, had his annual vaccine shot and his rabies shot, checked the rash (which turned out to be Bug Bites which the vet said he saw alot of lately and nothing to worry about), and of course tore off the claw.. and sent him home with antibiotics, and a cone! Turned out to be a very productive visit, and thankfully nothing serious, and actually pretty reasonable cost! Its those emergency visits that get ya! Anyway, Deuce claw will eventually grow back, and the rash... well... there ya have it.. bug bites.>if your interested in what it looks like.. i could post a picture... they look like bruising<. Thanks to all of you who responded, and for your advice.

Ouch!

Glad you had a chance to see the vet and that it's nothing too serious. I would always rather be safe than sorry. Thank you for the update.

...and we'd love to see some more pics of your pups.

Just wanted to let you know how helpful your post has been...my min pin has some red spots on his belly and inner thighs as well and we just connected the dots from your post and think it might be mosquito bites...we just moved from the city to the suburbs and this is the first time he's been around mosquitos...we'll see if it goes away otherwise we'll be taking him to the vet to confirm.

The crawlies must really have a thing for Minpin tummies. My two have had the same exact thing, red spots the size of dimes on their stomachs and inner thighs. Luckily it was annual vaccination time....and the vet confirmed they looked like insect bites, likely ant or mosquito. They disappeared pretty quickly, in a couple days and didn't seem to affect them at all. Maybe Minpins have yummy blood or something?

unfortunately its not just the little min-pins getting bitten my big goof has a couple bites and a little farther south. Gotta say i'm not enjoying putting anti-itchy stuff on for him.

Our setters get spots like those from the black fly bites. Luckily they don't seem to itch much and just fade away over a day or two. Unfortunately, the black flies are hanging around longer than usual this year.

Hi dena! I know your issue was so long ago with your miniature pinscher.... but I have a miniature pinscher... and I picked her up from boarding her yesterday and all of a sudden she has these bumps on her nose, eyes, stomach, and her goods area and she was also very swollen down their... she looked like she was neglected where she was staying and now she also has all this dry skin on top of it. And was thirsty like I never seen. But anyways I just wanted to know if you had some older pictures of what your min pins rash looked like. I greatly appriciate it! Thanks much!
