And yet another recall

I just received this notification. The disturbing thing is these products are made by Del Monte - and they purchased wheat gluten from the same supplier in China that Menu Foods did. This gets more scary as the days go by:

"Del Monte has announced that their Ol'Roy brand wet food, as well as
the other brands have been made using the tainted wheat gluten also
used by Menu Foods. The other brands are: Jerky Treats, Gravy Train
Beef Sticks, Pounce Meaty Morsels, Dollar General, and Happy Tails.
They are now recalling their food.

Just keeps getting worse!

How can so many companies be so critically dependant on a single supplier? Isn't competition and variety supposed to be one of the strengths of our type of economy?

This is really unmasking the pet food industry, at least for me ... to see Hill's and Nutro in the same boat with Del Monte and Save-A-Lot Special Blend says everything.

I stopped after this whole mess broke,..felt verrry uneasy about the wheat.

This is just beyond the pale...

Thanks for posting this, Goldengal. I hadnt hear this latest:

Food Recall

So far all the foods and treats I have heard of (wet & dry) beening recalled have had wheat. I feed a wheat free dry and am just staying away from cans. I am also thinking of making treats to be safe. Where will the recall stop?

It might turn out that this is just for the U.S., but I know there are lots of members from the States on this board. Also, it makes us realize this could be even more wide spread, and yes, Del Monte do make people food, Mocha's mum - fruit and veggies that I buy, and probably more I am not aware of.

We too feed wheat free kibble, but for a while began adding Pedigree chunks in gravy as a treat. While it has not been affected, we quit using it as soon as the first recall came out.

I belong to a couple of seniors board where they have a little pet section, and they must be getting sick of seeing my posts because they are all lately about recalls - and way too many.

On a list I belong to:

Waggin Tails: Here is the list of foods they have added to the
suspended sales list.

Wysong Chicken or Beef Stew in Gravy
Triumph Gourmet Cuts
Avo Select
Pinnacle canned
HiTor canned
Evolve canned
Eagle canned
Wellness canned

They are voluntarily suspending sales of all foods
made in the facility of the recalled foods.

I do not understand why they added Eagle Pack canned to their list as they do not make a wet canned food - only loaf, and it contains no wheat???

All Eagle Pack dry products are made in our own plants. We do not use wheat gluten in any of our formulas, nor is it present in our plant facility/property. All ingredients at our plants originate in the U.S.A. with the exception of Duck Meal from Germany, Lamb Meal from New Zealand/Australia, and Fish Meal that originates from clean ocean waters of Argentina.

Our canned foods are NOT involved in the Menu Foods recall. All of our products are safe and we will continue to take every measure to ensure their safety. Eagle Pack products are 100% guaranteed.
From Eagle Packs site. They do make wet canned, just maybe it's not available where you go? Also, they don't disclaim their canned food is made at Menu.

Waggin Tails is a distributor online and as Eagle Pack is made at the Menu Foods facility, they have decided not to take any chances, much like a chocolate bar company puts on their bars now, may contain traces of nuts or made in a peanut free factory. Just because the stuff is not in the food does not guarantee no traces. Just a thought.

The canned they make is only loaf, and I do know it is made by Menu as I have an email from Eagle Pack relating to this which I actually thought I had posted. There has been so darn many communiques that it is overload. I will see if I can find the communication from Eagle Pack, but it was a week ago so I might have deleted it. Incidentally, Eagle Pack's canned is expensive. I think I paid something like $2.59 for a 200ml tin, and even though I knew it was okay and has no wheat, and I had only given Montana half a tin, I threw the rest out and have not opened the other tin I purchased at the same time.

This is the email I received from John Marsman, Nutritionist, Eagle Pack on March 26:

"Menu does make our loaf style foods. There are no shared ingredients. The attachments should help. A question. For pet owners wanting to buy canned product made by someone else, how do you know they will not be buying the same tainted ingredient Menu bought. At least we know we are not.

And another note...the information being circulated about Natural Balance is not correct. Natural Balance non organic dry food is made by Diamond in the Diamond plant. Natural Balance canned food is made by American Nutrition in the American Nutrition plant.

Thanks for asking and you can post any of this.

John "

I think we should all start writing to Ottawa, lobbying for regulation of pet food.

In this whole nighmare,I am outraged, that we even deal with China in any kind of foods.
Here we are, don't use pesticide in our gardens, takeing care not to poison our animals. Then the pet-food suppliers deal with China, one of the worst offenders in the world for spewing poison in to the athmosphere, using products that are banned in the modern world and worst of all killing our pets
Is there no limit to what companies do to save money???
I thought at least my cat-foods would be save from anything made in China
