okay I called a second time because I found more cans in the cupboard and this time they said they were going to send me a return ticket Very weird. I don't want to send them back I'd just like a coupon LOL! Maybe I'll call again later and see if I get a different rep or something.

L4,my store Ren's Pet depot will take mine back,I would not throw them in the garbage, the Starlings will eat it,or the Crows, but at what they cost,I rather replace them, hopefully the store has cans beyond the recall date.

I've decided to do as SCM is doing. My cat's always eat 50% raw that is mixed with either NV or Wellness and a bit of novelty flavour from another manufacturer, so they will be getting some B1 from those other sources.

Weird. I'd rather have the coupon deal. I can easily return my since I work at the store I bought it from.. but sending them back is too much of a hassle. I'm not even going to bother. I just hope with the return kit that there are some sort of coupons enclosed.

What's been bugging me at the back of my mind... is that there must be people out there who have cans from the affected batches, feed their cats Wellness only, and do not have a clue about the recall...

oh I'm sure. If it wasnt for me joining this forum and the megacolon support group about a week ago, I'd have no idea about the recall. Good timing I guess

. . . . like me . . .

I had issued over the past several weeks with one of my cats (Fred) who has diabetes. The diabetes had never been a big issue (other than having it!), but a short while ago Fred had a reduced appetite, lethargic, disinterested in things, slightly weak, lost a bit of weight. His appetite issue became enough of a concern that I went to the vet. Some antibiotics for an odd infection of his gums (despite having this teeth cleaned a few months back) as a first step. But when I came home, I came across a notice of this past recall. Checking my stock (I live in the sticks, so I buy in 8 or 10 'flats' of canned at a time) I see the remaining few flats are from that period.

As of the last few days I've switched foods if only to get him to eat more (using Go!Natural grain free). Still not much change but then it's only been a few days.

But yeah . . . not knowing and having to scour the internet to stay on top of recalls.

I'll have to spend more time on the FelineDiabetes forum and this one.

Angry as hell if this is what has affected Fred. And hoping he comes back around to his mouse and gopher hunting self.

Hello to you and Fred, from a fellow Albertan and diabetic cat mom.

Did the vet do any blood work at all? What was the antibiotic that Fred received?

Does he eat the rodents that he hunts? If so, it's possible that he would have been getting enough thiamine from them to make up for the potential lack in the Wellness.

If you still think a thiamine deficiency might be a factor, you could either ask the vet for his thiamine levels to be tested (blood needs to be sent out to another lab) or else prescribe an injectable or oral thiamine supplement (should see an improvement within 24 hrs).

Some more info: http://maxshouse.com/feline_nutrition.htm

Quote:
Initial signs of thiamin deficiency appear within 1-2 weeks of the introduction of a deficient diet and include salivation and a failure to eat despite being interested in food. Weight loss, vomiting and mild ataxia may also be apparent. This progresses to a critical stage in which there are severe neurological disturbances with impaired righting reflexes and short tonic convulsions with ventroflexion of the-neck. Mydriasis, circling, dysmetria and spinal hypersensitivity may also be observed. Eventually, there is a spasticity of all the limbs such that the cat appears to be 'walking on its toes' and there may be cardiac irregularities. The terminal stage of the disease is characterized by semi-coma, continuous crying, opisthotonos and, ultimately, death.
