Unhappy It Happened ALREADY

As some of you know, Chase (our yellow lab) had TPLO surgery on March 7/2007 on his right leg. Yesterday his left leg gave out.

We were told by the specialist that did his operation that there was a 50% chance his other leg would go sooner or later. I never thought it would happen this fast.

So, he is booked for his second TPLO this Tuesday, July 17th. I am so not looking forward to this again.

The first time he put weight on his leg the next day but with this leg he won't put any weight on it at all. I sure hope it's not something more than a cruciate ligament injury.

I'll probably only get to log on here sporadically for awhile until things are settled down a bit again. It took me half a day to peel hubby off the ceiling yesterday.

Rainbow, do you mean his left leg gave out now? That is awful! Poor Chase! I'm so sorry you have to go through this again so soon! The good thing though is at least once you're through it, you're hopefully done for good!

Big hugs to you and Chase! And to hubby up on the ceiling!

Awww! I'm so sorry!!! It would have sure been nice if you'd been given a longer reprieve than that. Augh!

Poor Chase  , poor Rainbow  , poor hubby

Like Frenchy, i'm wondering how he's going to get around? I can't remember if it's front or back legs.

Maybe?? on the good side, when this all heals up Chase will be good as new . I remember when I was considering surgery on both my hands the surgeon gave the option of doing both at the same time and having 6 weeks of difficult recovery or doing them at separate times and probably having about 6 months of slightly less difficult recovery time (they need time in between each surgery). I guess lots of people opt for the quick and dirty double surgery and I guess if you have someone to help you along the way (like Chase does with his great Mom Rainbow) it's all over and done with in less time. Still VERY yucky

Lots of and for you all!

Thanks everyone. I'm still concerned that he's not putting any weight on his leg at all after resting him for a day. I phoned my vet and she is going to stop by after work tomorrow to have a look.

He walks around on three legs with his back left leg held up really high. He flips out if we try to use a towel to support him. He can go down the stairs to go outside (there's three stairs) but he can't get back up them when he comes in so hubby has to lift him. Good thing he's strong cuz he can only use one arm.

Oh NO Rainbow! What bloody bad luck THAT is...

You know I know your pain. Have you got a sling (towel with handles) to help him with walking ? Wow, at least I got a couple of years in between TPLO's. That really bites kiddo.

Post script: just read your post, I'm wondering about his hip Rainbow.

That's what I think also happened with Chase. His right leg went in November/06 but because of all the snow we got last winter we waited until March/07 for his operation as I was afraid that he would slip when we took him out for pee/poop breaks. So, therefore, he was compensating for quite a while.

Yeah, I know you know my pain. I hope Ceili is doing well. Chase flips out if we try to use a sling so we're better off letting him get around on his own.

And you think it's his stifle and not his hip ? Was he always like that with a sling during the early recovery days ? Gads, I swear my arm is longer from hauling Ceili around.

Thanks for asking, she had a bit of a setback on Sunday but seems to be back on the mend. Finally got her staples removed today (I think I lost 5 pounds in sweat ~ it took two of us to hold her while the Tech did his thing). She wasn't healing very quickly (my grrrrl of the NO immune system ) and we kept delaying. Unfortunately 3 of the staples were twisted (part of Sunday's debacle). I wish they would use superglue ~ SO much easier.

I'm not completely sure......that's why my vet is going to stop by after work tomorrow to have a look. But, I just had him outside for a poop and he was off and on letting his foot touch the ground. He also got back up the three steps by himself. Chase would have nothing to do with a sling with his first surgery either. In fact, he was walking on his right leg the next day.

Sorry about Ceili's setbacks but glad she is on the mend and hope her progress continues. The surgeon Chase went to used glue and it sure is so much better.

Awww, I'm so sorry Rainbow, that totally sucks  . Poor Chase  and now poor Logan has to wait even longer for his play buddy. I guess the only semi-good thing is that at least you don't have to worry about the weather issues and him slipping on snow.

Fingers crossed for an easy recovery .

He had Laser treatment which targets healing deep down into the cells of the muscles, massages to help relax & loosen tension and strenghtening exercises to build up muscle & resistance to strains. The critical care clinics are by referral only.

I'm not very familiar with acl injuries but hope this might help.
Has your vet mentioned anything about laser therapy for acl? Again never had to deal w/ that so unsure if it would help at all w/ ruptured ligaments but maybe in post op treatment/recovery to strengthen muscles?

I don't think it would work for torn cruciate ligaments. With the TPLO surgery they actually cut the bone to realign the angle.

http://www.vetsurgerycentral.com/cruciatelrt.htm#

It would probably be good for post-op though but the TPLO surgery is quite expensive and there's nowhere around this little town that would do anything like that.

Actually, hubby said "there's no way you're putting the mattress on the floor beside the cage....it's bad enough that damn cage is sitting in the middle of the floor."

I'll bring the mattress up when he's in Kelowna picking up Chase.

Hmmm, hubby seems a wee bit grumpy these days . Don't they know that we always get our way . So, you are gonna stay home with Logan and the cats and he is gonna take Chase for surgery?
