Deer Antlers

My mom recently sent me a deer antler for me to possibly give my dog to chew. I was just wondering if any members have given these to their dogs before and what their opinions on them are. He is a black lab and loves to chew, so if they are okay for him to have, I would love to give them a try. Thanks!

I saw them at the store and they were very expensive (like $20.00 for one 6" length). My DIL has a couple of small dogs and since her husband hunts she had him cut up a few antlers and the dogs love them. They also looked like they took a lot of abuse and held up well. They may well be worth the $20. I'm going to ask her to cut me a hunk for Halo to try.

I also had a friend who had a rack from a moose and his dog ate the entire thing!

Loki loves his antlers! They are a great chew for him to keep him occupied, plus help shine up those teeth of his.

I bought the smaller ones for my smaller dogs and they love them. Although they are expensive they last long and don't splinter.

We have the smaller ones for our dogs too. They are definitely worth the money for us. We bought Connor a medium sized one for Christmas and it's only about half gone now. He chews it every single day. They don't splinter, don't make a mess, and they don't smell. They best chew toy ever, I figure! Hahah.

Another vote "for" the antlers. Yes, they are expensive but do last so...good value for the $$

Anyone giving antlers to large dogs? My Roxy eats an 8" Pizzle in about 4 minutes...this is cost inhibitive!

Loki is a Dane... he's still working on antlers from a year ago, granted, he's not a huge chewer either.

Well, maybe I will try one then. I am mostly worried about Roxy crunching it up and swallowing chunks. She is a very powerful chewer, and very dedicated chewer too. Right now her favourite chewie (besides Pizzles) is a hard Nylabone that she chews on for a few hours a day.

I have a small dog, but he really is a destructo. Those bones that are like cow kneecaps, he can bite big chunks right out them, and he's shredded the Nylabones for the strongest chewers (the ones meant for big dogs... he can barely get his mouth around them). However, the deer antlers are just too hard for that. He has to grind bits off. It's not going to crunch up easily, I can almost assure you. But I would keep an eye on her the first time she has one, just to be sure! The only thing is that they are somewhat thin, so if it's a big dog, definitely try to get the biggest one possible.

Thanks for the input. I gave Zeus the deer antler and he seemed to like it .... just not quite as much as tartar busters. Luckily my mom did get him the big antler, which is great because he is a big chewer.

Thanks for your input! I don wonder, however if we choose chewies that are too hard and the dog is a big chewer, will they wear their teeth? I've heard of obsessive dogs wearing their teeth on rocks.

Hmm, I didn't even think about that. I mean, they are not so hard that they don't grind down. The one I bought Connor at Christmas is now about half the length that it was. The only problem I've noticed is that occasionally he grinds it into a pointy shape and pricks his gums with it, but this doesn't happen all that often.

I know a dog that loves to chew sticks/logs/tree branches/2x4s plus rawhide type chews and she's worn all four of her canine teeth down to where the top of the pulp is visible. So it's something to watch for and have your vet do regular checks on their teeth.

are they ok for cats too?

Hi,

I was just wondering if these were good for cats also?
One of my cats is an avid chewer. He has a few ''Tickle Pickle'' toys, but they don't last him very long.
I also tried the rawhide sticks for dogs, but he dosn't really like them, once they get 'mushy' he loses interest.
I looked at the pet supply store here in my area and they have no antlers...

Anyone?
