Dog Rolling in Poop Repeatedly

Hi

We recently adopted a new border collie, he is 6 years old. A great dog, very smart, well trained in the house etc., except he keeps rolling in our other dog's poop. We have had him for 2 weeks, he has done it 4 times, we clean him up and then he does it again. We have a farm and lots of space for him not to do this. It is always up around his neck, always around the collar area. Any advice or reasons for this weird behavior??

Hmmmm, not sure on this one. My lab loved to roll in all source or gross things (up around the head/collar/shoulder area) like goose poop, fish guts, horse manure etc but I don't think ever in dog poop. Maybe someone else has some advice?

It is a completely normal dog behavior! Some do it more than others in this case, your dog loves the scent of poop! Bad smells to dogs is like Chanel No5 for us!
Just try keeping the land clean as much as possible, or get an amazing call back so that when he starts doing this you call him right away and he comes!

Good luck!

It has long been thought that dogs roll in the feces of the animal they are tracking (hunting) to disguise their scent. Or not even the animal they are hunting, just feces, to help hide their scent for a more successful hunt.
