Canned vs dry for dogs

Canidae recommends 25% canned. She'd rather eat canned every day only forever,,,,but what is in the best interests of her health?

All things considered canned would probably be better then kibble but it is also a very expensive way to feed. I personally feed raw but like the idea of switching up the canned foods fairly regularly and adding them to kibble. Evo makes some great all meat canned and I think Wellness makes some good stuff as well. I would tend to agree with the 25% - 35% rule but make sure to factor the calorie difference not just volume.

My dog gets both... he is not fond of kibble, so I top it off with 1/2 can per day with his dinner, which is likely in the 25-35% range of his diet. He loves the canned food and is much more enthused about eating since I started doing this. Sometimes I throw in some other stuff, leftover rice, yogurt, or other foods he might like and that works too. His coat has improved a lot, it is very shiny and no dandruff or itchies.

Yup, my pups love a topping of canned as well. The fish based foods are way too yummy!!!! California Naturals makes a smelly salmon, mackerel sweet potato canned. It's good for their long haired coats

I also mixed canned with his dry kibble, or he wouldn't even eat dry kibble!
I mix one small can with 1 cup kibble.

Our guy is also not a big fan of kibble alone. We top it with a few table spoons of canned Merricks and we add some home cooked chicken or salmon.

My chihuahua-****zu gets blue buffalo puppy formula chicken in the morning and at night, and blue buffalo canned in the middle of the day. Seems to be working for him, he was having trouble with kibble for a while but when we added canned in, he became much happier

Chase prefers a mix as well....just enough wet to coat his kibble. I would stay away from wet exclusively though, for the sake of your pup's dental health. Maybe of you fed some raw bones it would be okay? Also remember what goes in wet tends to come out the same...

It's my opinion that canned food has endured a terribly bad rap. As a matter of fact I think it is a far superior product to be feeding generally than most kibbles. (High quality of course!) Kibble is highly processed, and canned usually contains more real meat ingredients than dry. It's my personal belief that kibble is not the cure-all for dental issues with dogs...regular brushing of tartar and especially recreational chewing of bones takes care of that better.

I have to note.....anything wet that goes into your dog will NOT come out wet. Adding more moisture in your dogs diet is a good thing, and if there is a problem with diarrhea, that would not be just because it was canned. That would be another issue altogether.

Thanks Purpledomino - I should note that I have learned better since this post. That was the result of listening to the staff of a certain large petstore chain, which I have since boycotted. at my misinformation....
