Close encounter with a Dangerous Butterfly!

The Hazel Run Mama had been riling up the red-spotted admirals all day, chasing them with the camera.

Ms Macie was on patrol, making sure that none of the Sinister Critters was lurking in the bushes
waiting to pounce on unsuspecting Setters.

"We've had no Dangerous Butterfly-related maimings or deaths on my watch,"
woofs Ms Macie as she makes her patrols, "and I intend to keep it that way!"

And then the unthinkable happens!!

"Freeze, Grace!! There's a Dangerous Butterfly headed your way!!!!"

"I'm almost there! And here's what we're gonna do:
I pounce and scare the Dangerous Butterfly off your head.
Then you run as fast as you can up to the deck
and I'll make sure the Dastardly Denizen leaves the yard.

Okay, now! Ready? On three...

And once again, Ms Macie's training pays off.
She pounces!
The Dangerous Butterfly takes wing!

Grace flies to the deck as fast as her little legs can carry her!

And Ms Macie escorts the Murderous Critter to the fence and makes sure it keeps flying at the border.

Once again, Ms Macie's constant vigilance has kept Hazel Run safe from Dangerous Butterflies!

I cut my images down to about 900 x 600 pixels (or thereabouts) before posting. That seems to be a good compromise for image quality / absolute size, so they're easy to upload and look okay on the screen. (On my screen, anyway If someone was viewing with their browser set for less resolution, say 800 x 600, they'd have to scroll either way to get the extreme edges to show. ) Then I just add them as attachments.

Or are you asking how I get them interspersed with the text?

I had a similar thought, breeze! I think the Dangerous Butterfly thought she had fine taste in fur color! They really did complement one another, didn't they?

hummmmm wonder if it could be considered "jewelry" you know beautiful butterfly as a fur piece for the Grace's fur/hair ??

it's amazing that the butterfly landed on Grace!! normally they don't land on dogs/cats, am I wrong??

Grace must smell like a flower

Normally they don't land on the dogs cuz the dogs are moving, but it was sooooo hot and Grace was sooooo tired that she lay down in the path of the Marauding Monster...and then had to pay the price for her laziness!

I think it qualifies as jewelry!

Picture 2 in post 3 sure does look like a butterfly jewellery clip!

What a sweet girl to be so calm amongst a butterfly catastrope.

Thank dawg Macie was on her ABC patrol.

Yep, lucky thing for Grace that Ms Macie was on duty! 'Course, if Grace would only take what Ms Macie has to say a little less seriously, she'd have been less scared in the first place! That Ms Macie--what an alarmist!!

Glad you got a chuckle out of it, GF! By the time the whole drama played out (and it took quite a while because Setters move very slowly when tracking Villainous Varmints sitting on the heads of friends ) I was giggling so hard I was having trouble keeping the camera steady enough to take pics...

If by some chance Grace was oblivious to the dangerous butterfly, being stalked like that would have to freak her out. ROFL. Your Ms Macie would have had a splendid time up at a friend's farm, last time I spoke to her on the phone she was watching stubble quail just outside the gate. Her GSD pup would probably just run at them barking but I'd love to see a Setter pup in action, doing what comes naturally.

I'd never seen it, either! Most butterflies aren't that crazy...but maybe this one figured Grace was gonna protect it from that mean ol' Ms Macie!

Thx, DMCWLVSSR!

What's really fascinating is that when one dog goes on point, very often (being good Setters ) the others 'back' the first dog--in other words, they point the first dog. They don't look for what the first dog is pointing, although if they smell it later, sometimes they'll slowly pivot and point the target instead.

They were bred to back if they don't scent the game. That way, a hunter working with a brace of dogs can always find the dog on point (and thus the game) by following the trail of pointing dogs. It would also keep the other dogs from rushing in and bumping the game before the slow human arrived. We've had up to 5 dogs backing at one time--pretty cool to see 6 taking their cues from each other like that!

Now how cute is that! What a great story and series of shots, just too funny. I love your info about the pointing Hazel. Didn't realize they would point each other. Good info. Halo, our lab X, is a good pointer, she can point a cookie from almost anywhere!

Yep, we always say that if everything smelled like a home-cooked meal, they'd be infallible in the field! Good girl, Halo!!!!

I know about adding text in the middle, but I can't get them under 100 kb and still be 900 x 600 pixels....isn't that the limit on here, 100kb?? Sorry, this may need to go in the photography technical section.

You know, forget that part LOL I just looked again and the size limit for jpg's is 197.7 kb, I'll have to try that next time My little pics I post seem so tiny compared to your wonderful photos - now I can make my good ones bigger.

Thanks, Melinda! Did the kids understand about Butterflies not really being dangerous, except in the minds of Silly Setters? One person I talked to about publishing a Dangerous Butterfly story a few years ago suggested that I needed to make it clear somewhere in the story that butterflies really weren't dangerous, or I'd ruin the childhood joys of a lot of kids.

You can push the limit a bit, too, Diane, because when the photos are uploaded, they seem to be automatically resized downward by the site.

This is pretty kewl and never knew the setter point process. Sometimes Gryphon sits out in the backyard starring at something and Mollie will point to him rather than what he's starring at! What a beautiful instinct. Thanks Hazel for the ed-u-ma-cation!

How fantastic is that! Positively brilliant! Must be wonderful to watch. I must ask our friend Aaron whether he's ever been tempted to shoot quail using a Setter or Pointer. I know I had a guy pull up here, with a trailer load of German Shorthaired Pointers, looking for paddocks to work with his dogs. A couple were Field Trial Ch's.(Is that the right title?? It was a while back.)

Yep, there are Field Trial Champions. Not our dogs, though! At least in the states, field trials are often done from horseback and hazel falls off horses.

Truth be told, I suspect Grace didn't have a clue as to why Macie was pointing her like that! And yes, she's pointing back. A real Mexican standoff...er...lay off...

absolutely LOVED IT. what pretty furbabies you have. we had a german short haired male named "bullet" for awhile. He actualy was a stray that came up where we fished if you can belive it. we look for his owners..they never came for him. he had a peice of gravel stuck in his back, but it felt like a bullet. (thus his name). when we got it out and saw it was gravel and not a bullet...we kept the name because he ran like a bullet.
He was pretty. BUT NO WHERE NEAR AS PRETTY AS YOUR CREW!
