The constant meow battle: dieting!

Hi all! This is my first time on the forums, apologies if this topic has already been addressed. Our seven year old cat has been on a diet for about a year...something he does not enjoy. While he's always started getting vocal about 30 minutes before his scheduled feeding times (5am/pm) we've recently moved and he's turned into a meow machine. He starts meowing/meowling for food up to two hours before feeding time...which is unfortunate at three am. We've tried increasing his food a slight bit, as our new home is a bit larger so he has more play room, but we need to stick to the vet prescribed diet. Does anyone have any advice on how to stop the constant meows?

I've read some other similar posts...so here's what we are doing: playing with him a lot at night, feeding him at regular times. He meows just far away enough from the bedroom that we can hear him but we couldn't reach by squirt bottle.

Thanks for any tips or advice!

Ditch the prescription food. What brand/type (ie dry or wet) is it? Honestly, there is almost never a good reason to fork over the big bucks for such poor quality food. A much better idea would be to feed a high protein, low carb wet food (still using portion control), or even balanced raw if you're up for it. The protein is more likely to satiate your kitty than the excessive carbs that are in most "diet" cat foods. Check out this link for more details: http://www.catinfo.org/?link=felineobesity

I do not like vet food either. Diet kibble is full of useless fillers. My dog was very lethargic on diet food. I agree with above, good high protein can food with portion control. Routine feeding creates robots. I have always changed my feeding routines daily so my pets never really knew. Only by an hour or so.

Thank you!

Thanks for the advice, and the welcome! The vet didn't prescribe a specific kind of food (we've just been giving him Purina complete) but he did have words about how much food we should be giving him. Long story short, Lucifer used to be 25 lbs...we knew he was giant, but the vet we had then said a cup of food a day was what we should give him. We got a better vet and he cut that amount in half. After a very cranky kitty and meow filled year, he's lost 7 lbs and seems much happier. That said, if we can find a wet food with more protein, I think that might be the ticket. Any recommendations on brands?
