Ear cropping
How late can a puppy get it's ears cropped? Also, what are the price ranges for this procedure in Ontario?
We're getting a Doberman puppy in August and it costs $500.00 to get the crop through the breeder. Surely there are cheaper out there? Any info. appreciated. |

Why crop? 'Natural' dobie ears are so much cuter.

I agree - natural ears...they are SOO cute.
but to answer your question...I believe that it's usually done around 7-9 WEEKS of age. After that it's much harder to heal.

I agree, no ear cropping! I volunteer at the local SPCA and one dog had such a bad job done on her ears that they were almost totally chopped off! I never saw the point (no pun intended) in cropping any dogs ears. Some vets refuse to do it.

While I agree with the others that natural ears are the way to go, if you do decide to crop, please do not go for the cheapest option as you may get what you pay for.
If your breeder is experienced with doing this (take a look at their show / working dogs to see how their ears look), it may be worth the $$.

I agree that natural ears look best, and I think they're also what best for any dog.
Cropped ears and docked tails are on their way out. The EU has banned ear cropping and tail docking. It's illegal in Newfoundland and Labrador. The UK Kennel Club has banned it in dog shows as of 2007. It is also banned in Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Israel, Cyprus, Iceland, and many more countries. Some states in the US are considering making it illegal. Many vets won't crop ears anymore. Dogs with cropped ears body language is often misunderstood by other dogs, erect ears can be a sign of aggression. Statistically speaking, dogs with cropped ears and docked tails are much more likely to be attacked by other dogs, than dogs with natural ears/tails. Why not get on the bandwagon now?

ear cropping
Cropping serves no positive purpose (alot of pain, sometimes infections) as it is cosmetic surgery solely to make the dog look more alert and aggressive.

Ditto to ALL responses so far.
Cropping is cruel and completely un neccisary. What if someone decided you would look better with pointy ears which protruded out the side of your head and didnt bother to ask you about it, then sent you in for mutilation? Its painful for the dog, and complete nonsense. Please research what you are about to do. Heres a few to start you off. http://www.projectspayneuter.com/html/earsandtails.html http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=2725 And finally for now, this link is probably the best IMO, not a "con's" list nor a "pro's" list, but just a good educational link about the after care and procedure. http://www.puppys-place.com/ear_cropping.html

Another vote against cropping/docking! I think humans are very cruel creatures to have decided that certain breeds should have parts of their ears cut off simply for looks!

I would rather see natural ears as well,
but it you are going to do, it takes a vet with skill and practice to do a proper job and also someone very knowledgable to do the taping properly, surgery can be done right but if taping is done wrong the ears will be screwed up, this is why it is better to follow the breeders advice since he know the vet that can do the job right, a lot of vets in Ontario will not crop or dock tails anymore as they also feel it is cruel and unnecessary surgery, so even finding a vet that will do may be difficult and as the one person said some vet really butcher and make a mess of the ears, so finding one that can do a good job maybe really tough, also there a 3 styles of ear crops, so a vet may be skilled in on type and not another 3 styles shown here http://www.dobermanclub.org/Buying_Puppy/ears.html Quote:
