Kennel cough my dog

My shih tzu has kennel cough. Vets given antibiotics. Awful time. He's eating but not drinking?

Does he eat wet food or dry? If wet, he may be getting enough moisture from the food, so wouldn't need to drink as often. How long has it been since he drank anything?

When did he get the antibiotics--have they had time to work?

I didn't realize kennel cough required antibiotics? I hope your pup gets well soon.

I think kennel cough itself is a virus, Lynne, but if they get a bad enough case they can get secondary respiratory infections that can lead to pneumonia. Back when the Pack was still 8 strong, Cole picked up a nasty case after being boarded at the vet and brought it home. Within 36 hours, the whole Pack was hacking and four of them got really bad and needed antibiotics. Luckily, the source was traced to a show dog being boarded at the vet and clinic picked up the bill for the meds....but still... Oy! It can be really nasty!

Kennel cough (infectious tracheobronchitis) is actually a blanket term. There are a couple of different pathogens that can cause the symptoms, both viral and bacterial. If viral, the antibiotics can help by dealing with any opportunistic bacteria.

To increase water intake you can add water to kibble and allow it to absorb before offering it to your dog. Keep in mind that moistened food should not be left out at room temperature for long, so if your dog is a grazer, this may not be the best option. Wet food can also have extra water added, making it more of a slurry. You can try adding a bit of low sodium broth to some water to make it a bit more enticing, or offer tuna water.

So glad he's better! Kennel cough can be a bugger to clear up!
