Question Weird fur loss thing...

So Heidi's had this little patch on her side, near her belly, where the hair is coming off. The vet has seen it, twice, and hasn't been very concerned about it, just told us to watch it. I'm pretty sure it's slowly getting bigger. There also is a smaller patch on her left shoulder, and there seems to be one forming on her back. She also has some hair loss on her left eyelid...I noticed one day a reddish scab, which turned yellow the next day, and now fur seems to be generally thinning on that eyelid.

The thing is, the skin is not red, bumpy, flaky, and Heidi doesn't seem bothered in the slightest by it. I'm stumped. I'm not super-concerned but I don't like the fact that a new one is coming and I'm starting to convince myself that she has some kind of weird mange I'm about 85% ready to ask for a skin scraping, but...I dunno, what do you guys think?

Aw Mom leave me alone would ya!! Heidi is so cute. You know, if it would make you feel better to have the scraping done then you should go ahead and do it. It would put your mind at ease. My girl Halo has a couple of little spots like that but one I'm sure is a birthmark as she's always had it. The other seems to be from seasonal allergy type things. I'd worry about the spots if they became inflamed or oozy in any way.

I agree with Dog Dancer. A scraping doesn't cost all that much and if it is something like demodectic mange, it's much easier to treat before it spreads too extensively.

Heidi is definitely a cutie!

Thanks for your input guys...yeah, she's a cutie and spoiled totally rotten, she's just so teensie and cute and naughty has such a smooshie little mug of a face with big dangly flurpy lips...it's so fun having a "little" dog (20lbs compared to our 55lb-ers). She was a wonderful "accident"

did she by any chance have a tick bite? Brina (labx) had two ticks removed by the vet and the hair fell out from where they were.....looks like the patch on your pups shoulder

I'm pretty sure it's not. We do get ticks here from time to time and they ALWAYS leave a big lump and a scab when they come off. I'm a picker/poker/prodder too and I'm sure I would have noticed it on her, my critters are subject to daily inspections...with the short fur I would have noticed it right away... Good idea though...

It doesn't look like anything extreme. The worst case scenario I see here would be Demodex, which is a reaction everyone gets (even us humans) when our immune system is weak and results to hair loss. My dog got that when he was struggling against Parvo.

But if you know that your dog's in full health, then it could be a birthmark.

She's largely healthy, although I suspect she is in the final stage of recovery from a very mild case of kennel cough. She is, however, very active, bright, happy and eating like a horse. I've made an appointment for a scraping for this coming Thursday, hopefully that will either shed some light or put my mind at ease. The newer spot on her back (not visible in the picture) seems to have dandruff-ey flakes today, which are slightly orange. That prompted the call to the vet.

A couple of thoughts...

Have you changed her food? There's always the possibility of food allergies. Even if you haven't switched foods it's worth checking to see if your brand has made any changes to their ingredients or where there's sourcing them from. Friends of mine have a big Newf that has terrible skin problems and he had a bad reaction when the brand they were feeding made some changes to their ingredients.

Maybe ask your vet about ringworm? It's not really a worm but a fungus that you can get special ointment to take care of.

Could the hair have been taken off by another dog biting at her or playing too rough?

Good luck with getting it figured out.

My how Heidi has grown! she is such a cutie! I haven't seen any pictures of her since you first brought her home. She is quite a bit bigger than a Boston Terrier, no? Her coat, size, and colouring remind me a lot of my molly!
My first guess would be mange, since it is in several places and it isn't going away. I think a skin scraping/ test isn't a bad idea at this point.

I'm getting more convinced it's mange. The spot on her back is now clearly visible (it used to be that you had to catch her at the right angle to see it) I hope it doesn't affect the other critters

Gail, we haven't changed her food since we first got her several months ago (Origen puppy)...and I don't think there's been any changes to the forumla. We occasionally supplement the dogs' diets with extras (raw rabbit medallions, raw liver, veggies etc.) But there's really no itchiness that I would typically associate with an allergy (we've dealt with environmental allergies here).

I don't THINK it's from roughhousing...she's had a few nicks on her head from that, but there's always been a scab before the fur loss, and they've certainly never been as big as the spot on her side (a good inch in diametre).

We will be asking about ringworm as well, although no one else is showing any signs of it...

Mollywog, yes, our little girl is all grown up...she's a boston mix, so she's bigger than your average boston (although apparently breed standard is up to 25 lbs, HUGE!) She's about 20-22 lbs right now, I suspect she's going to top out around 25 or so.

Anxiously awaiting some answers this Thursday!

Looking at the pics bendyfoot, it doesn't look like Ringworm to me and Mange I think generally the hair falls out in clumps. I have only seen severe cases of it. She sure is cute as a button

If it's mange and not itchy, bendyfoot, then it's likely the demodectic type. It's noncontagious since it's more of an immune system problem (temporary immune suppression due to stress or disease, etc). Most dogs have the mites (they get them from their mother at birth) but most don't have trouble with them. The good news is, once they kick it, they're unlikely to get it again.

Chris, the hair can fall out slowly--Macie had it on her face when she arrived and her spots just sort of faded in, then faded out as she healed and the hair grew back in.

I just finished googling...I suspect it's localized demodectic mange, as you said HRP. I was happy to read that neither humans nor cat's can get it, it's not easily spread (if at all) to other dogs, and shouldn't be a problem.

If that's what it is, and it's a "wait it out" situation, I'm going to hate that. I hate not being able to "fix" something when it's so evident that something is out of whack.

The little rotter doens't have any reason to be stressed, she's a pampered princess. The only thing I can think of is, like I said earlier, she had a cough that I suspect was kennel cough. It's pretty well cleared up now, no more nighttime "hack-hack-gag-gag" epidoses, but if her immune system was busy with that I could see how the bugs might have flourished a little then. Hopefully now that the cough is better her body will fight these.

Is there anything I can do at home, to either boost her immune system or to "treat" the mange (if only to make ME feel better?)

The Dr. Pitcairn book has a section on mange that I think you can read if you do a search through Google Books.

Thanks for the heads up on that Hazel, I have only seen a couple of severe cases and it looked very clumpy.

Even the stress of changing homes and adjusting to a new environment can affect the immune system. That's what happened to Ms Macie--too many changes in too short a time.

We used a topical on Ms Macie. It's called Goodwinol. Not sure if it helped or if the mange just cleared up on its own, but at least we felt like we were helping. Likely, if it is a mild case of mange, you'll be prescribed something similar.

Omega-6 oils are supposed to boost the immune system. We use a blend of 6s and 3s with Vitamin E (Lipiderm) but there are a lot of good products out there.

yeah, at least it's not something that other critters or people for that matter can catch. But still, we're looking at three months of meds...blarg. Poor baby. Apparently it's pretty common for her breed mix type.

Even though it is not good news bendyfoot, it sure is better than Ringworm, that little demon is h*ll to get rid of in a multi -pet household.

Ya, it's a slow process to get rid of it, but at least you don't have to worry about anyone else catching it! Are you using a systemic or a topical treatment, bendyfoot?

Ivermectin, actually (so systemic). I was a little surprised, because the same medication is given via injection to large animals, and we're to give it orally (with icecream 'cause apparently it tastes nasty)

Ivermectin is a pretty standard drug for demodex. The old daily liquid heartworm preventive was oral ivermectin.

for Heidi's quick recovery! Watch for fine, silky hair growing back in the bald patches. When it comes it will be a very welcome discovery!

I'm not expert in dog, but i got cats with almost the same problem, a spot fur off in head and body. I sent them to vet and give some injection. After one week no more spot fur off.
