Snapping Turtle

A lady found this guy outside the dog park this morning and having seen me with my camera earlier, called me over to take pictures. Thankfully Mom was there to babysit Sunshine 'cause I wouldn't want her anywhere near this much temptation.

Gorgeous. I found one many years ago crossing a busy highway. Stopped traffic, flagged a dude down and loaded the monster into my car. He was bigger than a toilet seat.

snappers and sliders have a path worn across our yard, weekly we go out front to the highway to remove one so the backed up traffic can continue, in around august we'll keep an eye out and collect the "twoonie" size babies fromn the edge of the road and bike path and give them a hand to the swamp

What a big guy!

I recently seen some turtles here in the canal - only a fraction of this size of this guy though.

The first time I've seen turtles in the "wild"! Hahah.

This guy looks huge! Cool pics. We have turtles at the lakes here, but I've never come across them on the streets or parks.

Really good photos. A pond we visit has some a foot or more wide. We like to see them and help them across the road too but I don't want any dog close encounters. That head can shoot out way farther than you'd expect.

Great pics of a very handsome turtle, ownedbycats! I'm glad your mom was there to help watch Sunshine while you collected pics for our enjoyment!

But I hear ya, Longblades--I've got a lot of respect for those jaws!

You can actually grab them by the back of the shell (just above the tail) and they can't reach (snap) you My brother does it all the time to get them off the road......but if they are really big, then they are to heavy to carry.
Oh and you have to be quicker then them, because they are FAST and can whip around and get you

we put a branch in their mouth and they snap down and hold on to it, then you just grab them by the sides of the shell, like happycats said, down near their back legs and carry them to the swamp or put them in the tub in the car and drive them down the road to the sanctuary.

Knowing how strong those jaws are and how fast they can move, I was very pleased this one was safely off the bike path. I think it was just taking a rest on its way to wherever it was going. It wasn't all that far from the river, so after I got my pictures I let it be.
