Smoke Alarm safety tip
We all know the rule to change the battery in the smoke alarm when the time changes every year. No biggie. Last year our local fire department had an article in the paper telling people that they had to actually test the smoke alarms, not just the battery (which is all pushing the button does). They recommend that you get a metal bucket or large pot and put a piece of burning paper or something that will smoke in it and pass it under the smoke alarm. Does it go off now?? That is the only way to make sure the sensors are not blocked with dust and dirt. I had never heard of that before or done it, so I just thought I would pass this along. It's a very good safety tip

Good tip . I'll have to have hubby do it one day when we are out as that noise sends Lucy into a panic mode . We do know that the downstairs one works as the BBQ sets it off frequently when we forget to close the appropriate window .

I'll have to give that a try to see if my work. I did just replace the batteries in the spring so this would be a good time to test!
Great tip and thanks D.D.

So if it doesn't work, DD, is there a way to clean the sensors, or do you just pitch it and get a new one?

You guys are funny. I no longer have a detector in the kitchen because it would go off every time I opened the oven door My BBQ also sets mine off if I forget to close my back windows. Hazel I don't think you can really clean them, they're pretty much disposable these days. I'd just go and buy another. I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who had never heard of this though, but it really does make sense.

Okay so we're all in agreement that we probably don't need to check the ones in the kitchen (geesh what a bunch of bad cooks we are... Dinner will be ready when the smoke alarm goes off!).

In my apt bldg the unit smoke alarms are wired into the bldg - no batteries to change, though it does have a tester button, I should still do the smoke test though

lol u guys are too funny
if its any consolation, my mom is an excellent cook and she still ocassionaly sets off the alarm. I always set it off when I make homemade pita too just another warning for all, if uve had any lightening damage make sure to check ure smoke alarms after..we only knew somethng was wrong because it was connected to our alarm system and the panel kept beeping at us. When lightening struck the house the alarms pretty much imploded. When we took em of the wall and shook them they rattled!! had to get all new ones.

Please please please.....people, if you live in an apartment building, or have an alarm company that monitors your detectors, kindly phone them before you test these alarms, as this is a vast vast majority of the false alarm calls we get.
Thanks your firefighting friend Bearsmom

Bearsmom excellent reminder
The way they set my building (built mid 1980's) up it's on a closed circut so any time an alarm goes off it's only within the building and not actually connected to the FD, someone has to call them I guess there were too many kids pulling the alarms or the suite alarms were going off too often

Atleast you guys get to actually burn something as in dinner. If one of us takes a really hot shower it sets the one in the hall of. If the house ever catches fire while i'm showering i'm going to think its a false alarm and ignore it.
