not sure about the smell being stronger, but I would imagine it would with her hormones going out of whack. Is your male nosing around her now? are they still friendly towards each other? if so, I really wouldn't worry too much, keep him away while she gives birth, he may not even be interested, but go by her reaction to him afterwards, some males will actually help care for the young, siamese are famous for helping the females with the kittens, we never separated our pairs when they gave birth. good luck and keep the vets phone number handy!

Hopefully you are planning to get your kitty fixed when she is finished nursing .

I have not heard of male cats killing kittens. I know lions do if they have not mated with the mother, but not domesticated cats.

I would, however give momma a quiet room with a large box/carrier to give birth in, her litter box, lots of quality canned food. She may want to keep all adult cats away from her and her kittens for a while.

I just read you other thread with the pic of your sweet girl . Do you have a vet on call just in case something goes wrong? Some Kitten Milk Replacement just in case momma (I take it this is her first litter) rejects one or all of the kittens and you have to feed them every 2 hours? Also a quality digital kitchen scale to weigh them every two days to ensure they are all gaining appropriate weight (10 grams a day)? Cotton balls to stimulate their bowel movements and urination after each feeding?

It's quite common in the semi-feral cat population (like barn cats) for a male to indiscriminately kill kittens. The theory is that it brings the queen back into heat so he can breed with her. Not sure about the theory but I am positive it happens however in my experience it is a male new to the colony who does this. I don't remember any of my farming relatives saying this happened with their resident males. On the other hand, sad to say, they probably didn't pay much attention.

I have turned down or quickly found homes for some kittens because a resident, spayed female of ours will seriously injure any cat she can and probably kill kittens. So it can work both ways.

If your two get along now I guess, as others above did too, that you will be fine. When Momma cat gets to leaving the kittens more or you have to go out it might be a good idea to put wee kittens in a safe place, just to be sure. I don't think it's likely your mellow male will harm them but nobody can read a cat's mind.

Have you made any plans on what you will be doing with the kittens once they are ready for forever homes?

That is amazing. Please pass onto to them the importance of having them sterilized when they come of age. Also, try to enforce the importance of keeping them indoors. I know you already know this and I am certain that you found great homes for them.

I was curious as to if arrangements were made. You seem very committed on taking care of them.

I was only asking as I am working with a no kill shelter. If you are stuck, or need help with placement, please let me know.

Hopefully to homes that will ensure they get spayed/neutered before 6 months . As Kathryn posted in your other thread, the world doesn't need any more cats for a while .

Please keep the kittens with their momma until they are AT LEAST 10 weeks old so they can be properly socialized (they will make a much better pet ), 12 weeks would be better.

I would keep some unscented hypoallergenic baby wipes on hand too for stimulating for potty time and to clean them up when they make a mess. Sometimes moms will reject a baby or an entire litter, so KMR is good to keep on hand. Also sometimes moms will not produce enough milk, or will get mastitis and can't nurse them anymore.

Also, try to not use regular clumping clay litter around them if possible. It's not really good for them if they eat it and it's also very dusty. If you have access to something like Worlds Best Cat Litter that's what I use, or just check with the company of the litter you use to see if it is okay for around kittens. I can't use clay litter because I have asthma and when I would scoop the boxes I couldn't breathe, so imagine what that does on little baby lungs.

It may be the male getting hurt you have to worry about. Once she has her babies your female may decide she has to chase the male away just in case. A mom defending her babies (even if they don't really need it) can be scary.

Please do not have any clumping litter in the room with the babies. When the kittens start walking around at 3 weeks old, they will be in there eating it , which will cause a blockage in their tummy .

Definitely . I really think she should be in a room by her self with the kittens for the first few weeks anyways.

You have been getting some great advise. The only thing I would like to add is that if it is in any way possible please keep your momma cat and your male separated while she is nursing. Is there any way you could set up a small corner of your bedroom as her area or even the floor of your closet? I am not entirely comfortable with a male who does not have much patience for a female cat in the first place to be around her kittens. Also, some members have told you about instances of cats eating kittens. Please know if the mother thinks her babies are in danger she *could* eat them herself. I had a feral cat who did that to her one and only litter. She does not need a lot of room. A large box is sufficient. Preferably closed in so she feels safer. You can leave the bedroom door closed so you don't have to worry about the male getting near them until they are at a big enough size Momma won't worry about them as much. JMO

Yes, absolutely do not allow any other pets access to momma and her kittens. Even once they are running around. All it will take is your male to hiss at one of her kittens or be a bit too rough and momma will be there like a rocket to attack your male.

Quite normal. She's processing the waste of all the kittens inside her. It will probably be pretty stinky while she's nursing them too.

Not sure what you're feeding her, but the best would be as much good quality canned food as she'll eat (Wellness Kitten is a good one). When my feral kitty, Cinnamon Girl, had her litter, she was eating about 20-22 oz of canned food a day!

Actually, no. Tuna is high in environmental toxins, and just like people aren't supposed to eat too much (if any) tuna when they're pregnant or nursing, that applies even more so to cats. Is there anything else that she likes? What other food does she eat?
