Fear of stairs

Boo will be 2 tomorrow. He is fully recovered from his luxating patella surgery and moves beautifully however he is still TERRIFIED of going up the stairs. If I bring him only 2 steps down from the landing the and put him down gently trying to coax him he becomes rigid, starts making distress sounds, flattens himself out and sticks his legs out claws extended like a cat.He then turns around and runs down the stairs! He stopped going up stairs about 9 months ago we thought perhaps owing to his leg issue but now that it has been operated on and healed I am thinking that this is definitely behavioral (his leg was xrayed just today to confirm that it healed properly).

Im thinking that this may be one phobia we will just have to accept. Admittedly he is a bit of the more sensitive kind and likes to contemplate each step and movement- perhaps steps are too fast for him.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Advice would be appreciated!
