Unhappy Liver Shunt Problem

Hello everyone....I am new to this site and searching for advise on my situation. Today I was told my 1.5 year old Shihtzu/Laso Apso needed surgery to correct a liver shunt problem. The specialist at the Vet Hospital told me the surgery will cost between 6000 and 8000 dollars. I was shocked when I heard the cost. Unfortunately I did not get pet insurance for my baby. I am willing to do what it takes to get my little one back to good health, but I feel the prices are outrageous.....has anyone else experienced this type of situation? Are there any other places that can perform the surgery at cheaper rates? I want them to do the surgery but I can't get over what it's going to cost me.....My baby is only 1.5 years old she has a full life ahead of her.....any suggestions or advise is welcomed.....

Oh, wow. No experience but I think I would certainly be paying for at least one second opinion. Is this Vet doing the op him/herself? Is this Vet a specialist? An internal specialist?

My own vet diagnosed the problem and sent me to a internal medicine specialist. I have also contacted the OSPCA. It looks like that's the going rate for the surgery. So I will be moving forward.....I have to save my little fur baby....she's like my child. I've done quite a bit of research on it as well and consulted with other family and friends who are pet owners. I now feel comfortable proceeding with the surgery but I don't think I will ever be able to process the cost.
