Feeding guidelines

When I feed, I go by calorie requirements needed for the day as well as body condition. If she gets ribby I will start by adding 1/4 cup for several days and see if that works, if not, then increase by another 1/4, etc. The only time I look at the guidelines on the bag is to find out the calories per cup amount.

I've seen in several posts that people say the guidelines are high and you generally need to feed less than what is listed.

Here's my question: Do you end up feeding more or less than what is listed in the feeding guidelines?

I've never actually had to feed less than what's listed, always more because my dog is so active and has a very high metabolism.

I feed within the feeding guidelines, but to the lower end. I also do add extra for a few days if she has had extra exercise or looks a bit thinner.

Thanks for this thread. If my kitties didn't seem so healthy and energetic, I might have become concerned with the amount they eat. Like mafiaprincess, I usually end up feeding them lower end to below the guidelines.

Boo gets 2 cups of Evo RM (before I started adding Canidae) and for his weight, the recommended amount is 3-3.5 cups. So no, I don't follow them at all. I feed what my dogs need, and adjust in 1/4 or 1/8th of a cup increments...
