An adrenaline rich JD adventure
omd, an adrenaline rich morning!
As I was taking some used litter outside, JD ran out the door, hit the snow and decided he didn't like it, scooted across the yard and ran up the tree to just out of reach! All in his DEC (Dreaded Elizabethan Collar) which he's been wearing since his surgery last week. I thought my heart was going to stop--or it was going to choke me since it was up in my throat! (Okay....enough with the s...I'm sure you get the idea! ) Anyway, I popped back through the door to get a toy and yell for hubby and then rushed back out to try to convince JD not to climb any higher. There's nowhere for him to go in that tree since it stands alone inside the fence, but it was only -12°F, so way too cold for the little blighter to spend time out in, and I sure didn't want him to fall from any distance... Thankfully, he loves his mommy and daddy and wasn't too thrilled with the tree idea once he realized he couldn't get back down as easily as he got up. The tree limbs are just above my head and almost in reach, so I was able to call/coax him down a branch and convince him to try to step down onto a birdbath that was hanging there. He lost his balance and ended up hanging by his front paws off the branch, but I could at least reach him from there! Whew!!!! omd, who knew cats could be so stressful! (No I won't put in any more panic-stricken emoticons, although one would fit perfectly here! ) Enough stimulation for all of us for one day, I think! On an up note--Cass seems to have successfully weathered another crisis and with a change in meds, I think we may be granted a little more precious time with the old dear.

This might be a good place to put this question, but my sister suggests that maybe I shouldn't take JD outside on his harness and leash in the summer--that it encourages him to be interested in the outdoors and might lead to him wanting to escape. My thought was that if he's sort of familiar with the outside, maybe he wouldn't panic, run off and get lost if he accidentally got out. But I've learned you can't logic it out with cats--they're inscrutable!
So should I stop taking him out in harness with the idea that maybe he wouldn't be interested enough to make a break for it? I have to say that after yesterday's frigid escapade, JD showed not the slightest inclination toward the outside door this morning!

I don't know if this would happen to you, but years ago we decided to take our cat for walks on a harness, in our yard. He liked it too much, he would stop and spray on bushes he came across. After that he would stand at the door and try to run out when it was open, and also started spraying inside the house.

My goodness Hazel Just when you start to relax with your JD he lets loose a whole lot of crazy
You certainly are a great writer though as I felt like I was actually there with you! Never a dull moment when owned by a kitty I say I'm glad to hear Cass is doing better. |

Oh my gosh. I've seen many cats head down trees head first till they get to the point they have to jump. It would be very hard to do that with the cone on. Glad that adventure is over. Yep, cats'll do you in. One minute they act wild and self sufficient and another they're crying, "MOM!"

He was definitely uncertain about how to get down. Once he got to the first set of horizontal branches he stopped and stepped out on one, but he kept looking down and you could see him working out the fact that he had no clue how to get back to the ground. I had no idea that they'd come down head first--I always thought they backed down... Luckily we worked out a different solution or he'd be up there yet!
And yeah, the DEC wasn't making things easy! He caught it on the bark on the way up and once I got him back inside, we spent the next half hour picking little bits of bark out of his fur...
