High Protein Dog Foods
One of the members here mentioned that he read on another forum that someone with a seven month old puppy was told by Champion Pet Foods not to feed Orijen until it was older. I emailed Peter @ Orijen as it didn't make any sense to me since Orijen makes two puppy formulas.
I also asked Peter for clarification on the myth that high protein is bad for dogs since a lot of people don't know that it's really the calcium and especially phosphorous content they need to be concerned about. This is the reply I received from Peter. You can click on the websites he refers to for more information.... Quote:

I was very impressed with his reply. It must have taken him some time to put this information together and that is great customer service imo.

That has to be the longest email reply to a question that I have ever received from any pet food company.
In fact, I originally included my comment in post #2 at the end of his reply but was told my post was too long. It said the maximum number of characters allowed is 20,000 per post and mine contained 20,041 so I had to take off my added comment and repost it. |

Rainbow- thank you for that! I think that Orijen is a outstanding Canadian company. I think that they have had to make their position known due to the fact that there is so much concern with respect to protein levels. I learned alot. I also know that there are camps on the "other side" who too believe their position is more appropriate ie the "keep the protein in moderate amounts".
I think all we can do is continue to listen and align ourselves with a "philosophy" that we are comfortable with. Orijen is confident in their product and presents their belief in an informative way. They have chosen the extreme. When I look at the continuum out there, they have made their stance clear. I respect that. I have not seen them try to come out with a grainless lower protein food like Wellness Core for example. So, the success they have is an example of how people believe in their message, their science and their products. I love getting informed!!!!!!

Wow, that was some reply. I think you have developed a good emailing relationship with Peter over the last few months, as I know you have had lots of questions for him about the Orijen line. Thanks for the information.

Hee hee....yeah, it all started two years ago when I emailed all the Canadian pet food companies at the time stating the concerns about menadione sodium bisulfite complex (Vitamin K3) in their foods. Peter @ Champion (Orijen & Acana) and Michele @ Petcurean (Go Natural) were the two most receptive.
I love good customer service. |

Wow... thanks for posting that! It makes me feel even better about feeding Orijen, knowing that they do respond to concerns and do it in an intelligent manner.

That post was very informative! Definitely helped me understand more about the safety of a grain-free diet. One thing I am still not clear on though is how do I know the foods I am considering have safe levels of calcium and phosphorous? What percetages of each should I be looking for (for a puppy) and should I be concerned about these levels just until he's one year old or two years old?
Obviously Orijen is safe....though do they recommend feeding their puppy food to one year or 2? And does anyone know about the levels in Wellness Core? They say it's safe for any dog over 1 year.... |

Great post Rainbow! (I'm glad it came back, because I didn't see it the first time, maybe it's because I didn't have a dog back then)
I'm going to switch Buddy to Orijen.....but why does it have to be SO expensive It's made in so I figured it would be cheaper then Welness.

Its expensive to purchase yes, BUT
The amount of it you need to feed to maintain a good body weight is amazing. I fed 3 dogs on it ( one grower) and a bag would last me 2.5 weeks (1 large, 1 Giant grower and one medium breed) In the end, you do end up saving a great deal of money. PLUS: if you buy from a "Petfood warehouse" you get points, Orijen has a 13th bag free that they offer, and if you save up your points until that 13th bag, you actually get 3 free bags You spend a fortune to get there, but it is worth it.

Erykah, do you know where any of the Pet Food Warehouses are, besides the one you go to?

That "frequent flier" deal should be available through ANY supplier, it's not the supplier that arranges it, it's Orijen. Ask about it for sure. And yeah, other than Jaida we are able to feed all our critter SIGNIFICANTLY less food (like half) on the Orijen than on the cheap (and sometimes not-so-cheap *cough cough vetfood* crap stuff (which apparently just went right through 'em)

At global I get the 13th bag free but not the 3 bags that Erykah is talking about.

Global is the closest store to me, so I'll ask about the 13 bag free thing, thanks Buddy has to get through his bag of Wellness Core first.

I'm actually using Acana - same company - bit lower protein. The Global I go to transferred the credits I had on my Natural Balance card over to Acana. I also have one for the cats GO, which is buy 10 get one free.

I'm not sure where else there are Pet food warehouses. There are 2 in Sudbury, and honestly I don't know about other cities.

Thanks Erykah, Sudbury unfortunately a tad too far. I am going to see if I can find something similar within a reasonable distance.
