Top dry cat food

Besides Orijen, what are some of the top dry cat foods out there. I like to buy from Global. I certainly do feed good quality canned food as well, so the dry is just a supplement.

Other grain free options are Wellness CORE & Innove EVO, Horizon Legacy.

Acana, made by the same company as Orijen (Champion Pet Foods).

There are tons of great dry foods at Global. Learning to interpret the ingrediets lists is really helpful.

Can I ask what brand of canned you like? I'm a know-nothing about cat food and I'm persuading friends of mine that Hills and Friskies (I think that's what they use) is . I've taught them how to read labels and directed them to the dogfoodproject and some other cat-specific links that Growler had posted but... how much of this gets absorbed and acted on is another matter. Sometimes it's easier just to say "Buy this". The cat is a 3 yr old with no health problems other than a very mild form of hyperesthesia.

Good commercial canned foods would be Wellness grain-free, Nature's Variety Instinct, Innova Evo, By Nature, Evanger's, Ziwi Peak, some of the Merrick and Natural Balance flavours.

Thanks Sugar... you've always been on top of the catfood game. I think most of those are carried by our local petfood store. If not, I'm sure a place like Global would carry same.

Cool! Some of these brands can be quite expensive (Ziwi Peak in particular), but if cost is an issue, there are some decent ones that contain a small amount of grains, like Precise or Eagle Pack. I think variety is important (and prevents cats from getting bored of the same thing, or alternatively, getting addicted to one brand/flavour). I'll even feed the occasional can of gluten-free non-fishy Fancy Feast.

We've been feeding the Wellness CORE canned for over a year and it's one of the only canned foods that both cats agree on. So we really like it. We buy it a case at a time so we're not trotting to the store every week, and we get a case discount.

In the past we've fed Performatrin Ultra Chicken Stew, the cats loved it like crazy and the regular Wellness, which oddly, one cat wasn't particularly fond of. I think we've tried pretty much every premium brand out there and it always comes back to the CORE for my kittehs.

Cat food and fish

Thanks for everyone's input. To answer I was feeding prairie canned food, right now i'm feeding evo canned food because it's available in larger cans. I am babysitting another cat right now, so i go through more food. I will probably look at wellness too. I think i will try the evo dry chicken grain free. Go natural looks pretty good too. No to fancy feast, only in a pinch if I have to buy from the grocery store. Is it true about cats shouldn't eat fish?

A fish-flavoured canned food a couple times a week would be acceptable for some cats (but not those with allergies, urinary tract or kidney issues). Fish isn't a natural protein source for felines and is a common allergen, but it also can be a concentrated source of environmental toxins and heavy metals (especially tuna), and is high in phosphorus. As well, because fish has such a strong smell, it can be addicting. This creates problems if you ever need to eliminate fish from the cat's diet (like due to the aforementioned medical conditions).
