BSL in Vancouver & how to get a dog to Canada
I'm new to the forum.
The reason why i've joined this board is that my hubby got a job offer from a company located in Vancouver. He really loves Canada, has been there for several holidays and he wants to get this job (and his english is better than mine ). Smokey (Am. Bulldog-Mix) looks more like a pitbull than a bulldog, so i'm not sure if it's a good idea to go to Canada. I was told that you've got BSL and that he possibly could be put to sleep when he arrives at the airport? I'm really scared of loosing him somehow  Can anybody tell me something about BSL, how to get him to Canda safely? Any other "Dog-Laws" in Vancouver? Nothing is fix yet, but we are thinking about the opportunity of leaving Germany for a few years! ... sorry for my bad english... |

As far as I know only Ontario has BSL legislation. With the proper paperwork and medical clearances you shouldn't have any problems.
BTW Welcome to the Forum Klopfer. |

I don't have a dog myself at the moment, but I do volunteer at both the city pound and the Vancouver SPCA shelter.
There are currently no BSL in Vancouver or any of the neighboring city. There are a few by laws though. Some of the by-laws in no particular order: 1) Aggressive dogs must be muzzled when outside. This law is actually pretty good, it means that if somebody's toy poodle is aggressive it has to be muzzled. Whereas if a Pit Bull Terrier or Rottweiler that is very well behaved does not have to be. Aggerssive - As the city defines it, not the owner. No "He/She is so gentle at home, they have never done that before.". City's definition: Aggressive Dog "Aggressive dog" means: 1. any dog with a known propensity, tendency or disposition to attack without provocation any domestic animal or human, or 2. a dog which has bitten another domestic animal or human without provocation. 2) Dogs must be on leash outside at all times, unless at one of the designated off leash parks within the posted hours. Also the leash may not exceed 2.5 meters in length. 3) All poo must be picked up. 4) Any dog over three months of age must be registered with the city and licensed. This needs renewal every year. Can be done at the pound, city hall or online now. If you keep this up to date, if your dog get loose and picked up by the city you have one free pass a year (provided the tag is renew every year). Hopes that help and also welcome to Canada.

Vancouver did have BSL in place at one point, but it was removed a couple of years back or so.

True there is no BSL in Vancouver but there is an election coming up AND more controversy surrounding "pit bull" type dogs so we need to be rallying the troupes again!
Welcome to the forum!

Haven't been here for a while but here are some news:
If everything goes right, we'll be looking forward to moving to Canada at the end of 2010 (maybe in October)! I'm really exited! |
