Epilepsy

Hello,

I think my GS has epilepsy. My kids described what appeared to be a seizer a couple of months ago. I wasn't present for it but the way they described his behaviour it sounded like it was. This weekend he had a full blown grand mal seizer. It lasted about 5-6 monutes. It was so scary. We really didn't know what to do. He weighs 120lbs so we were worried he was going to really hurt himself.
Does anyone have any suggestions or information for us on dogs with epilepsy?
Thanks

Seizures spaced so far apart may not be epilepsy but from other causes, some of them pretty serious - not that epilepsy isn't - so a vet visit asap is essential. If you click on the search button (above) and type in epilepsy, it has been discussed frequently on this site.

Thanks for your reply-
I did check out the links and they have very useful information. I quess I'm worried about my dogs possible unpredictable behaviour during a seizure. I'm at work 3 days aweek and them home 4 days but I can't be with him and always watching. I'm scared he may harm the kids, harm himself or our kids..what can I do during a seizure? What can I advise my kids to do ( kids are 13 and 15). I'm just a little freaked out from what I saw. It was very violent, he fell to the floor, stopped breathing for a time, legs were stiff, kept trying to stand up but keep falling down. He's a big boy so I worry he'll hurt himself...

Noting your location, I realize this may be difficult but it's important that your dog see a neurologist.

To put pillows or blanckets around the dog , to make sure he can't fall (if there's stairs near) but tell your kids to not touch your dog , they (dogs) get very confuse during and for a while after the seizure. Some dogs can bite.
