Orijen and Acana new formulas releasing soon

Spent last weekend at the PIJAC show in Toronto and thought I would share what I found at the Champion booth for anyone who's interested.

Their new mix for Orijen is going to be 80/20/0, instead of 70/30/0 (meat/vegetable/grain). Had the opportunity to sample the new food, and Lexus was head over heels for it - and this is the food she eats already. Not sure when it will hit the market, but a heads up to anyone currently feeding it, make sure you don't run right out when you buy bags so you can mix them over a few days. Nothing worse than an unexpected formula change after you've run out of food.

Also, Acana is releasing a new formula called Ranchlands. So far it's dog only, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a cat formula there soon. It's Beef, Bison and Lamb. Once again, Lexus did backflips for it. She's not that picky, but I carried a handful of it around the show and not a single dog refused it. We'll be trying it as soon as it comes out and I will post a review of how the dogs do on it.

That's great! I feed my dogs Acana, used to feed them Orijen but it had a little too much protein for them. I like how with Acana I can alternate flavors so the pups don't get bored.

I presume that the increase in the amount of protein is also going to mean an increase in the price.

I haven't heard about a formula change but am going to the pet store tomorrow for a new bag and will see what they say. If they haven't heard then I'll contact Champion Pet Foods for an answer and post what I find out.

Orijen's new formula actually has lower protein, it's very deceiving what they're trying to do. They're using more "fresh meat" which is good marketing but they still rely on the Meal to provide the most protein. It says 80% now because the fresh meat increased but actually the protein went down! Not to mention the carbohydrates went up. So the price increase doesn't make sense.

When you cook the "fresh" meat you lose the majority of that ingredient because 75% of it is moisture...

I'm at my wits end on what to feed my dog now, I dislike the new formula change. And I really dislike how they keep saying pets love their food because of more fresh meat, it's because there is more Liver (which is a by-product). They use the by-product in their Acana/Orijen.

I kinda like the addition of the fresh meat even though that makes the % protein go down. I think that would make it more digestible in the end since the meat meal is already processed so you are essentially processing it twice whereas the fresh meat is going through one phase of processing.

I assume they are using grain in their food for filler since grain is not that great for dogs.

80/20/0 means no grain as in 0 part of that breakdown
