Question What's your favourite/least favourite small dog breed?

I've been surrounded by big dogs my whole life, and meet plently of big dogs at the dog park, so i have an idea of what most of the popular large breeds are like. But ask me the difference between a Maltese/Havanese/Bichon Frise etc etc and I'm clueless! I also find internet breed descriptions so general a lot of the time. Anyways, I was thinking this would be a great chance for those small dog owners out there to be an advocate for their cuties, and educate me in the process!

Oh, and don't forget to include some pics!

My fav are anything terrier (silkies, yorkies, norwich).... just don't try telling them that they are small dogs. The little ones are actually 150lb dogs jammed into sub-20 lb bodies.

Ok, out of those three I know what a yorkie is (the tiny brown and black things right?).. I am very illiterate when it comes to small breeds!

Theres a few Boston pups in my neighbourhood...soooo cute! Theres also one a little older named Gucci! Awww. Is a Staffy Bull terrier considered a small dog? if so thats my fave. I do like Chihuahuas too though, aww come one, these are not fair questions. each is special in its own way LOL I have been thinking of getting Rocky a dog LOL I have decided to wait and see what happens with the court challenge so I could possibly get a Staffy Bull if we win The dog would actually be for my daughter and three year old son so a Staffy bull would probably be the best. The daughter lives next door and I know I would be taking care of him most of the time! BTW Silkies arent chickens? I have no idea what they are then. Yikes! I mean my daughter and HER three yr old son.

Of small breeds, my favorites include the Shiba Inu, Shih Tzu and the smaller terriers, especially the Scottie and the Staffy Bull. I don't have a least fave small breed.

I like Norfolk Terriers

Here is Gomez at pretty much full size, about 11 pounds, but he thinks he is a giant! He likes playing with big dogs better than little dogs, but he will play with anybody, anytime, anywhere - I have seen him out-run a few big guys!

He is not yappy at all, as a matter of fact, he barely barks, is very playful, but also loves to sleep a lot - chases squirrels and birds, but also has a pretty good recall even though he is a terrier...

Norfolks are close cousins of the Norwich Terriers, but the Norwich Terriers have ears that stick up, otherwise, very similar - if you saw "Best in Show" the little one was a Norwich...

Here is his dogster page for more fotos - he is getting hairy-er, must add some sasquatch fotos! www.dogster.com/?144383

Gomez, your pup is too cute! Love the photos.

I like a small dog with some substance and personality. That's why I have a schnauzer. Fluffy, but strong too.
I am slightly afraid of big dogs. I can't predict their next move, lol. They make me nervous. Although I grew up with a rough collie, so that breed is the exception.
I am not partial to the shih tzu's and bichon type breeds. Too 'froo froo' for me, and there bottom teeth stick out, lol.
I like the scotties, westies, wheaten, and I met a Havenese the other day called Coco. Nice breed.

I grew up with three bichons, so I would have to say they are my favorite. They are amazing with children, at least every bichon i have ever met is, and so sweet. The way they follow you around everywhere, they remind me of little white golden retrievers. All three of our bichons are still around, though getting pretty old, here is Aggie:

Favourite breed is (was) mini Dachshund - weighing no less than 10 lbs. of muscle. Least favourite small breeds are those under 8 lbs. - or dogs intended to weigh 20 lbs. but genetically altered to become toy or teacup dogs.

This is Dory the papillon, she's about 11 lbs, a sweet, hairy little dog.

Sorry this is the best picture of her that I have right now...

Your puppies are so cute!

Gomez is yours still a puppy? He looks like one!

I'm going to put in some pics of dogs people menitoned. Because I can't picture any of them in my head! Yup, I can tell you the traits of most big dogs, even rare ones, but when it comes to small dogs the only I've had some experience is Chi's, Min Pins, and mini Schnauzers, and that's pretty much where my knowledge ends

Ok, so here's a Shih Tzu:

Norwich Terrier:

"Silkies"

Ok seriously though, Silkies:

Shiba inu:

Scottie:

What's your favourite/least favourite small dog breed?

Joey was a shih-tzu (actually he was probably a mixed breed but his looks were predominantly shih-tzu, his personality led many to think he had some strong lhasa apso) But it's hard to tell what part of his personality was just him--and what part was from the probable abuse he suffered.

Our new puppy is a shih tzu and I have to say I do love this breed. I originally went with shih-tzu because my daughter wanted a "cutesie" dog and my son has allergies so I wanted to keep down the shedding.

But there is so much personality packed into just a tiny bit of dog. As one of the women at the vet's office said "They got the whole dog in there !" She's not a big fan of small breeds but loves the shih tzu.

So do I !

k, sorry to say this by my least favorite is the shih tzu. They make great companions but after looking at big doggies my whole life, I don't see it in their face... Jacks are my favorite. They're like little pitties.

Kayla, Gomez is still a puppy, 11 months old today!

His face is still the same as when he was 5 months, he just has a lot more hair now!

I actually was never around small dogs as a kid. We always had Doberman Pinchers. And I'm actually not very fond of small dogs, but I think it's more the way their trained and raised than the dogs themselves. I have an Italian Greyhound, they are my absolute fav. They have so much personality stuffed into that small body. And they don't bark very much at all, which really gets to me about little dogs. My least fav. is the pekingese. They kind of scare me a little.

This isn't going to go over well, but I don't really like small dogs at all. There are two exceptions to that: yorkies and norfolks. Other than that, I find that small breeds are too high strung. Also, due to the over-popularization of toy dogs, there are so many of them with horrible behaviour, and it drives me nuts. (I know it's not the dogs fault, but the owners, but still, it's annoying as hell to hear them yap for 10 hours a day)
Oh I'm a huge fan of JRT's too, I just never think of them as small dogs even though they are.

***Obey the Shih Tzu***

Lot of big dog fans from my street love this Shih Tzu.
I could say he has no behavior issue. Some people say they are
impossible to house train but mine is OK.
I would be supurised if he bark more than twice a day.
Mine is a very easy going guy and doesn't care much.
People love to pick him up and squeeze him so I have decided to
find him a boxer body guard.

I've had poodles for 38 years. While most people think of them as frou-frou dogs, they are actually sensitive, intelligent, mischievious, little clowns. There's a size for everyone. Den-Den is a miniature. Corky is a toy. If I were to get a large dog, it'd be a standard. Ideal housedogs - no shedding, no smell. Lots of grooming, which I love.
This is Den-Den.
