I think the rat terrier was ment to kill rats. They look kinda of like a Jack or a Fox Terrier, but the are a bit smaller with pointed ears. I am not sure if they are even a registered breed.

Roxy, Picture the dog you posted in above picture - and imagine him all white with Eskimo fur - not the undercoat though and this is the dog I met the other night while out buying kitty litter for the Spawn of Sata. Couldn't quite figure what the mix was but definitely had something like this in mind. Very friendly dog - owners didn't speak much English but had tons of puppy pads, digestive enzymes, you name in in their cart - along with bags of very corn based food and biscuits. I managed by showing a picture of my Eskimo and then pointing to pictures of corn cobs on other brand of food and then to the digestive enzymes and the puppy pads that this was a big part of problem. Pup is 6 months old - mostly Eskie - just couldn't figure out what difference was - very friendly to me. Too bad all 3 owners smoked constantly - worried about dog. I came home and my husband thought I had been in a bar.

Actually, that guy up there is a mouse. Rats have smaller eyes and ears (they're more proportional ). This is one from a rat breeder (http://www.thedumbotree.cjb.net/) :

Shih Tzu's rule
I did a lot of research and I mean a lot of research, before I decided on the right breed for us.
And although I love Cockers and Papillons the Shih Tzu was the winner after the research was all done. The hardest thing to get used to was the squish face. You have to read the dog differently and now I have trouble reading dogs with a long nose. My Shih Tzu is a perfect fit to our life style content to be on the couch and cuddle. I do admit that we did have and still do have to work on COME. My sister-in-law raises (CKC)Mini Daschunds and they are the most friendly of dogs. I think the final choice of best small dog is all a question of personal preference. Whats your life style, and how does this breed suit it, not what does the dog look like. I've never met a dog I didn't like, big or small I love them all. I can't live with them all but all breeds have something to recomend them.

Well, since I have a pom (black and tan) so I must say that Poms are my favorite small breed. Yes, Rusty has been a bit difficult to housebreak and yes, he is a bit yappier then my rottweiler ever was but I got him as an older puppy and his home before mine wasn't, shall we say, optimal. He has a lousy coat and more closely resembles a long haired chi then a pom.
I dislike the pekingese but won't say I will never own one because you never know what might happen. I hate poodles of any size and will never own one. I can tell you that any animosity I had toward the breed has been firmly cemented by the poodles in my family.

I love Joey he is the perfect small dog. English Cocker Spaniel. I specifically wanted an english one as I perferred them to the american cocker spaniels and think they are much handsomer. Thats just my opinion though. He hardly barks, just wants to cuddle and is really affectionate. He is also not to small at 27 pounds he is a big little dog.
I have never wanted a shihtz-zu although this man walks one everyday and he is pretty cute. Poodles can be cute to, but I really dislike the poofy poodledoo I think they look much better just natural. But then if somedog a breed who wouldnt normally want showed up on your doorstep and needed a warm place to stay. Would you turn him away. I wouldnt.

Ok - I wouldn't leave a poodle outside to freeze to death, but I can promise you it would be a short visit.

When we finally met one we were both surprised at how small they were. There heads are quite long so maybe that makes them appear larger. According to this link English Cockers are slightly bigger than american cockers and you can notice the head size. There is an american cocker down the street from us, and to be honest he doesnt seem that much smaller then Joey. http://www.ecsca.org/difference.html
