Strange Behaviour from Min Pin
I have had my 9yr old Min Pin mix Tyson for about a month and a half. A weird thing happened last night while we were in bed. He started swallowing and licking (sort of like he was going to vomit) but then jumped off the bed and started sucking on the edge of the area carpet fringe. I got up and left the room with him and he went to drink some water. We went back to bed but he was restless and got up again and started sucking on one of my shirts that was hanging on the doorknob. Has anyone ever heard of this behaviour? I think he had something caught in his throat and maybe was sucking to try to swallow it down. He eventually settled down (after 3 am!!) and he is fine this morning. I just found it very weird since I had a dog for 14 years before him and she never did anything like that. And he never has chewed or licked anything in the house since we got him. Hopefully tonight will be a better night's sleep!

Swallowing and licking is often a sign of nausea so he likely did injest something that was giving him trouble.
Glad to hear that Tyson is okay now. And, welcome to pets.ca ....we would love to see pics of your boy. |

Thanks! - I'm glad he's ok too! I've just never seen or heard of a dog sucking on material to alleviate the problem!
I'm new here - how do I post a profile pic so I can show off my boy? Never mind! I figured it out. Last edited by R. Bear; December 26th, 2008 at 06:15 PM. |

Just out of curiousity ~ did you find out what he ate that made him ill?
A thought ~ my Bridie is faster than lightening, I'm just lucky she has a cast-iron stomach or she would be well-dead several times over. If your boy is prone to the "snatch & grab", you may want to keep some Ipecac on hand. And you absolutely want to completely puppy-proof your home! Another hint... as long as you are certain there isn't an intestinal blockage...when they're obviously nauseous or have vomitted a little, if you make them stand and stroke them very firmly from the chest along the belly to the hinds you can usually make them vomit. I just realized how much I know about I AM a true dog-lover ! |

Nope; never found out what caused the upset. But he hasn't had any problems since. I'm keeping a close eye on him when we're out on our walks. In the house he doesn't touch anything - I guess at 9 yrs he's well past the chewing stage! Thank God for that!
