Glutton vs. Grazer feeding for dogs?

How do you feed your dog? I think Sadie was naturally the grazer type, but in order for me to make sure she was eating the right amount when she was a puppy I encouraged her to be more a glutton by taking her food away when she wandered away. Now I wish I hadn't done that though because I think it's contributed to her food-aggression that she displays once in a while. Sadie eats twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. I just split her food up into two servings, so half a cup each feeding. It's nice because I can get her fed in a manner of minutes (she really gobbles it down).

My friend's yorkie and chihuahua have food out all the time. Her Yorkie is getting pretty porky and the chihuahua is way too skinny.

I'm curious about how you guys feed your dogs and what is supposed to be the better way of feeding.

It's not a question really of better, it's really dependent on the dog.

I have had labs and they wolf down anything in front of them (my old lab at 18kg of dog food after breaking into the cupboard...). Our dobie on the other hand was free fed. He barely ate and we just left his food out (little did we know until he died that most of the food eaten from his bowl was eaten by the lab... She knew not to eat the whole bowl because she would get in trouble...)

The dogs I have now are not really possessive of food but they will keep eating and eating. These are the first control-fed dogs I have had that don't lie though... I mean when I wake up and I don't know if my boyfriend fed them or not, they don't lie to me. My old lab used to get excited as though no one had fed her ever, and as a result she'd get fed like 2 or 3 meals at a time by accident...

Dalton was a grazer until Goggle the glutton showed up on the scene. Goggle’s first move after eating is predictable.....straight to Dalton’s bowl to see what is left.
