|
want to gain weight
one of my dogs has chronic active hepatitis and i home cook for him. we feed him 4x a day but he is still lean. he is active and happy but we want to put a bit of weight on him. how? any suggestions? i presently have doubled his salmon oil but that doesn't seem to be doing it.

What do you feed him now? How much protien, fats etc?
When I saw that title on the side bar on the main page, my first thought was 'that better not be under the one for people'

he gets 3/4 c protein, usually buffalo or white fish, 1 c rice and about 3/4 c pureed veggies ( variety with pureed apple or blueberries as well) 4 x a day. it is alot of food for a 46 lb brittany. he is quite active and his liver disease obviously, uses up alot of his calories. 6 squirts of salmon oil a day also.

what is the reason for the rice and the veggies? is that a requirement for dogs with kidney problems?
I would think that would make it harder for him to digest food, but I am far from an expert. You could ask your vet to refer you to a animal nutritionist for a safe, weight gain diet.

what about adding oatmeal? it is much more bulk than rice isn't it?
