I think it depends on the cat and if that cat controls it's appetite and if the cat will then only want kibble rather than canned. Canned is so much better for them and will not go bad if it is fresh in the mornings and any left overs are thrown out when you get home and re-fed with fresh. My cats have previously been fed only twice a day and they were fine (have to do it 3 times now but that's another story).
