Distraction is the key. Whenever I have a pup in for spay/neuter surgery I always make sure to have on hand some new yummy smoked marrow bones for when they come home. They're so taken with the bones they don't think about licking at stitches or running around playing, they just lay quietly chewing on their bones. Even though they eat off most of the smoky outside stuff within a day or so, it takes a long time (days, weeks sometimes) to get the marrow out. I always make sure to have enough for all my dogs just to be fair and also to keep the others more settled so they don't want to start playing with whoever's just had surgery. Stuffed kongs would be good too, especially if they're frozen they'll last longer.
