You can never predict how a cat will react when you get it home, however, I have found that male cats are much more social than females, especially females who have had a previous litter.
When you go to the shelter ask if you can see the cat's reaction to other cats, if he/she is quite calm, then there is a good chance that he/she will be calm with your kitty. Also, you can ask if they have seen this kitty's reaction to dogs. Perhaps the cat was fostered in a home with dogs, or owner surrendered.
