Cardiomyopathy? There are a few different kinds. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM, the most common), which is a thickening of the heart wall, and Dilated cardiomypathy (DCM), thinning of the heart wall, are the two main ones. A definitive diagnosis can only be made with an echocardiogram (ultrasound with Doppler imaging of the heart in action). Not to be confused with
electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), which may be used along with X-rays to determine if there is a heart problem initially, but won't tell you which type of cardiomyopathy is present. Echocardiograms are also very expensive and must be done (or at least interpreted) by a veterinary cardiologist.
