I am so sorry LMPG   . That is just horrible to witness and I too think this kitty would not have made it to the vet. You did the right thing holding him/her while she passed.
I thought I was the only one that feels horrible to see an animal on the side of the road thinking it died alone
This could be a kitty that got out accidentally (even though it had a bell) so the owners may be looking for it, perhaps you can report it to the local AC and vet offices.
