I sometimes find that when the litter box in our house starts to smell, the room that its in sometimes doesn't smell as bad as other areas adjacent and I know the cats are not going elsewhere. I attribute that to the air moving around in our house since we have an air exchanger. Could be that the litter box is due for a thourgh cleaning by removing old litter, washing it out and puting new litter in it.
