Clean the filter pads weekly for goldies, every 2 weeks should be fine for tropicals. For goldies, once a month, clean out one layer of the media, next time clean the second part, that way you won't have a long time to wait to cycle the filter. For tropicals you shouldn't need to do this more than once every 3 or 4 months.
