It's been my experience that many cats LOVE foods of varying quality.
I'm big into nutrition for my cats and myself. That said.....if every meal is a struggle and kitty seems happiest on the cheaper food...... I'd try to sneak some good food in with the cheap food from time to time.
In addition, some cats like kibble and you can get high quality kibble - you may want to try adding that into the diet from time to time
