I used them when training my puppy, but he has always been really good for going outside. Now, even though he is all grown, I still use them, because he is very small (5 lbs) so he cannot hold it for too long and if we are not around he knows that is an option, also when he gets up at night he uses them (he never wakes us up unless he has to do more than just pee
