Personally, I think that your boyfriend's attitude toward your cat speaks volumes about his character. If he tells you that you have to chose between him and the cat, I would like to remind you of just one thing: your cat would never ask you to chose.
I have no solutions to your problems but I do know this - our animals are always honest with us if we take the time to see what their body language tells us.
