Opinions needed for Merrick Before Grain for cats

Hi
I need opinions on how good or bad CANNED Merrick Before Grain for cats is.

I just called Timmins, Ontario and there is a store there that carries this. They carry Wellness too, which I really wanted, but ONLY in the dry form for cats.

Is the Merrick good stuff? I'll be travelling 4 hrs round trip to get this stuff so I want to make sure it's ok, before I go all this way.

it is 1.89 for 5 1/2 oz.

Thanks
Debbie

My guys liked it, here is the site to check the ingredients for yourself...http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/canned_cat_food.php

IMO they are one of the better canned foods, and can you ask your store to order some of the wellness for you? I know my store here will order things in if they can on a need only basis.

Thanks krd. I asked the young lady at the store, but she said they only carry the dry Wellness food. Then she mentioned the Merrick kind and that it was all meat too and that she could order me some of that too, as I will need a couple of cases. Because winter is almost upon us and I won't be travelling on the hwys in our winters. (We had snow today.)

I was hoping that I could order food from Merrick, but they don't take phone orders anymore and I couldn't find any shipping info.

Before Grain for cats is not intended to be fed as a sole diet. The manufacturer says it on its website.http://www.beforegrain.com/ The reason for this is that the sole ingredient is protein. There is no source of calcium, so the phosphorus ratio would be way too high. It would be good for supplemental feeding. The other types of Merrick canned look good though, or try to get Wellness.

Instinct canned by Nature's Variety and Organics by Nature are very both very good canned foods if you can't get the Wellness. Wonder why the don't carry the canned???

Hi,

This is so confusing...

How about if I got the Merrick Before Grain and then still feed the Special Kitty turkey and giblets that is low in carbs?

I found the Nutriental values to canned foods on this website. Sorry I don't know how to copy and paste the graph over to here, so I will just post their website.

I just want to be able to buy good cat food for my furbabies. Sometimes I really hate living in Northern Ontario. *ugh*

Um yeah, it's 100% meats. There is tuna, turkey, salmon, beef, chicken and quail. My cats enjoy it as a snack. It's a nice food... but there is no reason to drive around looking for it. It is not anything special. All it is in ground meats in water. You could just make it yourself.

Isn't Special Kitty that Walmart stuff? I don't even feed any discount brands to my feral cats (they get California Natural). I would be too worried of it being recalled.

I talked to the Manager of Pet Value and she told me they could order me some Wellness canned food. Yeahhhh So I ordered 3 cases of Wellness and 1 case of Merrick. She is going to give me samples of the Wellness Core to see if my cats will eat it.

Special Kitty is Walmart, but it is low in carbs so that is why I buy it.

Merrick has the canned stuff other then the BG. They have several flavors that are grain free. My cats love them. You might want to try getting those. They have better texture then wellness which is all pate' kind.

mona_b October 22nd, 2008 08:58 PM

Since you are going with a great canned,my suggestion is to scrap the Special Kitty. It's actuall a very low grade food.Hence it's being sold at Walmart....;)

You can go with the Wellness dry also.Or the Felidae,Chicken soup for the cat lovers soul(my cats are on that now and love it.)..Eagle Pack Holistic.I also had my guys on Preformatin Holistic and Innova.

Kathryn, when you put the Merrik in the fridge,it ends up like the pate.:D

I love my Pet Valu. They are great.:thumbs up

Thank u for your suggestions. The Pet value store is very small so it only carries a few fancy foods. I will ask about the chicken soup for the cat lovers soul to see if they have it in stock or if I have to make a special order.

K, editing this as I have read your intro thread and no you do not live in sudbury.... that was someone else I see north and I think " Ooooh, someone near me" but its quite rare

Anyways, do you have a Pet food warehouse chain near you at all?
I have always had better luck getting "new" foods in with Pet Food Warehouse, I found that the Pet Valu's around here only carry what they carry and there is really not much selection.

erykah1310 October 22nd, 2008 09:42 PM

I'm sorry but I havent fully read and comprehended the entire thread (its late and WAY past my bedtime)
Have you considered Orijen at all?

Hi
No, I haven't consider Orijen (yet) cause I don't know much about it. I see people mention it in threads that I read today, but I don't know if it's for dogs, cats, both, canned or dry or both. If i could even get it in Timmins. If it is no grain, I guess it is or u wouldn't be mentioning it?

There is no pet warehouse in Timmins as far as I know. I live in Kap.

Debbie :)

Orijen doesn't make any canned food at all.......they only make grain-free kibble formulas for dogs, puppies and cats/kittens. :)

erykah1310 October 23rd, 2008 04:44 PM

yeah, Kap doesn't have the greatest selection for shopping...

I dont think Pet Valu's carry EVO either.

I don't know what to say really?!?!
Cat food here is easy enough since they eat Orijen kibble and have a few treats of raw so...

Just wondering though, why does the food have to be low in carbs?

In the link I posted above, I read that cat food should be low in carbs because cat's aren't suppose to really eat carbs as they are meat eaters.
