high protein, low fat

what would be a good food that has high protein and low fat?

Is this for any particular medical reason?

One of the better quality, lower fat (not *low* fat, cause cats do still need some fat) canned foods is Merrick, particularly Grammy's Pot Pie or Cowboy Cookout.

Okay, gotcha. Seeing as I know absolutely nothing about hedgehog diets, take whatever I say with a grain of salt. There is a list showing the protein/fat/carb breakdown of various cat kibbles (it's not all-inclusive though - Fromm isn't on there) but I can't say whether any of the actual ingredients in these foods are appropriate for hedgies (IMO, food should be about more than just the "numbers"): http://binkyspage.tripod.com/dryfood.html

Based on a quick look at that chart, Royal Canin Calorie Control 38 Protein has the biggest protein to fat ratio. Looking at the Royal Canin website, though, there may be a couple other newer foods with even more protein, like the Indoor Light 40 and the Selective 40 Protein Preference.

But again, I have no idea if the poor quality ingredients of these foods (like rice hulls, gluten, beet pulp, etc) are something to take into consideration.

The Fromm Chicken ala Veg formula that you are feeding is 32% protein and 19% fat.

Some other premium quality foods would be ....

1. Orijen with 42% protein and 20% fat

2. Wellness CORE with 50% protein and 18% fat

3. EVO with 50% protein and 22% fat

4. EVO also makes a Ferret kibble with 50% protein and 21% fat

Although all of the ingredients in the above brands are very good quality, I have no idea if they are all suitable for a hedgie.

Try to aim for at least 30% protein from a meat source like chicken.
And try to stay under 12% for the fat content.
Buy the best quality food that you can to ensure that your hedgie thrives and does not acquire fatty liver disease.
In the spring time mine always loved to munch on a fresh caught June bug for a treat. The crunching is kind of gross, but they are primarily insectivores ,naturally, so I put up with the grossness. ;)
There are some decent hedgie care sites on the net with lots of tips. Enjoy !
