kidney diet
 

My cat was recently diagnosed with very early kidney disease. I am looking for a renal diet canned food that is not just a solid lump of food in a can. My cat is more picky about the texture of her food. She currently eats sliced or grilled canned food ( Fancy Feast) and has never been willing to touch any brand of cat food that is the kind that just drops out of the can in a big lump. Does anyone know if any of the prescription renal diets have a better consistency? Thanks for any info you can give me.

You're not the only one here with a case of special diet.
I'm sure someone here will be able to advice. I've seen some users that are very experienced in cat nutrition around here.

Our two most experts about diets are Growler and Sugarcatmom. I think there is a thread recommending kidney diets, but I don't think any of them are slices, but I could be wrong.

To stay within your grain/by products free wish other foods with good low phos numbers: EVO 95% Chicken & Turkey, Felidae Grain Free Salmon, Felidae Grain Free Cat & Kitten, Wellness Kitten, Wellness Beef & Chicken, Wellness Core Chicken, Turkey & Chicken Liver.

While not grain free but by product free and still with good low phos numbers: Felidae Platinum, Eagle Pack Holistic Select Turkey & Barley, Eagle Pack Holistic Select Duck & Chicken, Eagle Pack Holistic Select Chicken & Lamb, Felidae Chicken & Rice.

I was told by the company to not use the guaranteed analysis to calc the phosphorus levels and the detailed analysis below was much more accurate for each flavour.

Here are my analysis:

Chicken 1.2 Very juicy
Beef 1.3 Dense
Lamb 1.5, the lamb is very dense so I am wondering if it my be higher
Duck 1.4 Very juicy
Rabbit 1.3 Very juicy
Venison 2.58 :eek: That one is out :eek:, this one is also very dense.

The food lowest in phos is Soulistic although that is in the upper end of protein but it is grain free which is a plus. Soulistic and Weruva are made by the same people. I'm not a fan of Science Diet but it looks like they make some varieties that are minced. The Wellness Healthy Indulgence pouches contain a chunky gravy mixture, the 4 lowest in phos are the ones with grains. Merrick (not the Before Grain) is a thick chunky consistency with somewhat of a gravy. Weruva is a great grain free, human grade, low calorie canned food but it is the highest in phos of all that I've listed. It looks like shreds/chunks of meat. Most are in gravy but some flavors are in aspic. I am still feeding it to my CRF kitty because I don't think it is toooooo high and he just loves it! The only reason I feed it over the Soulistic is that I can conveniently buy Weruva at my work and I get an employee discount. I think Weruva has a lot more flavors too.

The low phosphorus grain free foods that my kitty likes are EVO 95% chicken & turkey, Wellness turkey, Wellness beef & salmon, Wellness CORE original, Weruva Peking Ducken (almost any chicken based flavor), Best Friend Feline chicken and tuna in gravy, and Nature's Variety Instinct lamb.

The only flavour of Nature's Variety that is low enough for a CRF cat is the Chicken, everything else is way too high in phosphorus.
