my new puppy died

HI!

I just got an adorable new puppy 2 weeks ago and he died after only 12 days. My and my kids are devastated. He was perfectly fine when we brought him home, but then started coughing up mucous and not eating well. I took him to the hospital and they said he had pneumonia. They started IV fluids and antibiotics but he just kept getting worse. He went into pulmonary edema and died. They think it may be distemper (test results aren't back yet). The weird thing is, his sister who was also adopted is fine. How can this be. Also, I have another dog. Is he going to be ok. I am just sick with worry and heartbroken.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Have you asked the breeder about the dogs history? has the breeder lost other puppies from the litter?
Poor puppy:( :rip:little one

I so sorry to hear about the loss of your puppy, lo2wats :grouphug:

If your other dog is up-to-date on his vaccinations he should be just fine. Once the cause of your puppy's death is found, your vet can advise you on what (if anything) you need to do for your older dog.

My deepest condolences to you and your family.

There is a nasty strain of kennel cough that goes quickly into pneumonia. This particular strain is very difficult to treat. Unfortunately the very old and the very young sometimes cannot overcome and die fairly quickly. You can treat the best that you can (rather the vet) and they may not recover due to compromised immune system.

I am sorry for your loss as we have lost 2 in 2 weeks due to this illness.

My heart goes out to you.:grouphug:

So sorry to hear of your loss of your new puppy. How very sad. You say "adopted" so I assume the puppy didn't come from a breeder, but in any case you should advise the people you got him from of what has happened. Let them know you will advise them when the lab results are back exactly what it was. If this is an SPCA type adoption they really should know if they are dealing with something like this. When I adopted my LabX from the SPCA nine years ago she came home with undiagnosed kennel cough and was very ill for a long long time, although she had no symptoms when we adopted her. So they really do need to be informed. I hope your older dog is fine, but you should ask your vet about this when they give you the test results.
