Cat keep missing litter box!
 

My 1.5 year old cat started missing the litter box when he poos. He'd stand on the edge of the box while he's doing his duty, but then would step off and poo on the floor.

At first i thought he probably needs a bigger litter box (he'd been using the same one since he was a kitten), so we got him a bigger box. But he's still doing the same thing. He'd play with the sand for a bit. Stand on the edge of the box, squats... then as he poos he'd step off the edge and on to the floor.

What gives??? :shrug:

One of our cats did that. She'd perch on the edge of the box but often face into it so her poops landed outside of it. The solution for us was to put the litter box inside a bigger cardboard box and put some litter in both for easier clean up. This after making sure there was not some difficulty in pooping going on, like pain or straining that the cat blamed on the litter box, there wasn't. It took a Vet check for that.

We took a Rubbermaid storage container with high sides, took off the top and cut one end off for entry.

My cat used to like standing on the edge too and if he had a softer poo it would get stuck to his fur. I didn't care for this cleanup so I changed his box to one of those covered ones with the flap door. Now he has no edge to stand on and crouches in the litter leaving no debris on his fur.

I recommend keeping the litter box scooped and thoroughly cleaned at-least every two weeks and ensure you locate the box in an easy to access location. However i strongly feel that there could be an underlying medical problem that requires medical attention. It could be feline inappropriate elimination as its usually called in scientific terms.

My cat would pitch a fit and stop using his litterbox for sure.
I scoop every day.

I scoop every day.[/QUOTE]LOL, that was my first thought too. When the kittens were little I cleaned boxes twice a day. But I think the poster means scour out the litter tray and clean the tray, not to only remove poop and urine. Surely?
